Hoepfully got your full attention now. As most of you know (or may not know)
my room is pretty much full of crap waiting to be fitted to the car.
This in due time will all be done, which means the exterior is going to be finished
by French Car Show time.

So now finally I can draw some attention to my engine...

Now I have always planned to get Throttle Bodies fitted and still want to, looking
at anything near or just over 170bhp with a wide band of power as acceptable.
(at the fly not wheels

)

Was going to get it all done in one go but have now opted to do it in stages,
(by Pug1off hopefully).

My Pugsport should arrive tomorrow I hope, ordered a Supersprint 4-2-1 manifold
thats at home now.
Not going to bother with a filter as the standard one is fine for now, Im now looking at
Cams. Always had my eye on Piper 285s (guessing the 270s would be no good with a
TB setup?). Anyone have any info on theses or personal experiance?

Also when its getting Cammed a remap is a must but is it worth getting a
port and polish where requried? How far can I go with this (obviously the
head will be done, what about other internals?)

Oh yea when the Cams are done the followers, belt and pullys will be done.

Is there any consideration to take into, like the bottom end, fly wheel etc?

Final question lol, is an engine rebuild a good idea before or after having such
work done? And are they over rated.
Or is that something to consider when your car has done mega miles (100000+)

Its really really looking forwards to getting this crap done but dont want to
make mistakes.

Firstly if you eventually want throttle bodies then leave the cams and remap for now, or if you do get cams just now go for standalone management now- the reason being no point in wasting 450 on remapping standard ecu when you're eventually binning it for standalone for the throttle bodies anyway. port and polish is an idea when you fit the cams. When having the high compression pistons fitted for the throttle bodies, have them replace the shells and big end bearings (for piece of mind if nothing else). other than that standard crank is pretty much bullet proof and can handle 10k revs. Fly wheel isn't heavy enough to warrant being lightened. Piper 285's aren't real 285 cams but around 274 iirc. Real 285 cams would be good for throttle bodies but something like catcam 708's would be a good compormise between driveability and power gains. Also no point buying a filter as it wouldn't fit the throttle bodies anyway. gmc are making/have made their own throttle bodies for the tu5jp4 engine so may be worth enquiring about them before exploring other avenues. I think I've covered everything

I would buy it mate but
1 - want to get everything done myself
2 - havent got that kind of cash at the moment

Sean thanks for the info mate, I considered the fact that remapping would be
a waste but thats okay. There would be quite a wait been the cams and then
the TBs being fitted.
And yup reason for not getting a filter is it wont be needed later on.

Options are still going to be open as progress continues, will look into the
Catcam 708s now. Thanks again.

Well if u add up how much your going to spend on labour for some to build the engine an fit it unless u can do it thhen mapping it plus all the bits etc its not expensive mate.

bottom end is fine as it is, wouldnt bother with rebuild either. piper 285 are similar to pt51 or 708s around 265 duration so you want one of those or wilder

as sean said gmc have new setup but whether they have an order because they wanted 5 to start the ball rolling i dont know.

as this time though you just need to know exactly what you wnat at the end product. you say you want around 170, do you have a list of what you exactly want ?

edit- if you go 708 or similar you wont need forgies or cut outs. so you would want cam, head, ecu, bodies or forgies plus wilder cam like craigs and uprated spring, or a further wilder cam with solids etc which i doubt you want

Yea guess I kinda have a wishlist but my knowledge on these engines isnt
so technical if u know what I mean.
If the Piper 285s have the same duration as the catcams then I would probably
opt for the pipers.

Spec:
pugsport exhaust 2" bore
supersprint manifold (assume 2" bore again)
Piper cams
piper pulleys/belt/followers?
stand along management
port and polished head
Jenvey 45mm Throttle Bodies
gas flowed head (assume this is the same as port and polish?)

Something along those lines would be perfect. Aiming for a nice smooth
power curve

cool, well i edited the above post so have a read.

otherwise list is fine. if you go along those lines of cam you wont need pistons replacing. head work is called gas flowed for when its tested. also add skim onto that. head work wants to match the cam you choose.
you prob wouldnt need followers as noone seems to change them but the garage might say that.

have pug 1off said how they want to do it in which order wise.

When I contacted Pug1off it was originally planned to have it all done at once.
I would let them choose the type of Cams and even the manifold.

Whats the purpose of forged pistons if you dont mind me asking?

they let you run wilder cams. if you go wilder than 708 etc the valves hit the pistons so they need swapping. also offer better compression so little more power.
forgot to say i think widders is running piper285 if you know him. and could be an idea to cahse john up (gmc) about his as the were priced at about 6-700 and saved alot of time in labour. i also read hed do deal on bodies and management bought together

Ah I see, so as you said a 265 profile Cam should be fine without uprating
the pistons.
Cool, im sure the guys at Pug1off will fill any gaps I need to know about
nearer the time.

Cool cool, Im most likely going to get the Pipers as I have always had my eye
on them.

Plan was to get this all done by summer, but we will see...

I one to beleive cheapest isnt always the best (thats how Ive spent on the
GTi so far)
People do seem to rate the catcams though.

Will get onto my engine asap but need to sort the exterior out as said in the
first post first. Decided not to touch the interior, not much point imo.
