Performance!

Right then. I have a mrk 2 vtr, which has a piperX with cold air feed and a full s/s peco system. But im after more performance. Any idea's on what i can do next to increase 0-60, not too worried about top end, jus off the line speed. I dont want to spend a massive fortune quite yet, but im not looking for cheap fixes! Any ideas would be much appreciated!

    s1 rallye gear box
  3. #3
ok cool, any idea what sort of gain i am looking to see from one of these?
  4. #4
For best gains on a tight budget Id recommend changing the manifold for a 4branch item that way your get the most out of the induction kit and the exhaust.

Maybe lose the centre section in the exhaust as well to improve gasflow at the price of the exhuats note increasing.

Possibly even move the filter nearer the front of the car to a cool postion behind the passagner headlight and use a heat sheild to protect the filter from some of the engine bays heat.

Or completely strip out everything apart from the drivers seat - Weight is the Killer!

cool, i will investigate! thanks mate

Check out www.espdesign.co.uk for polished tubing and silicone hoeses to move the airfilter, they also stock a heat sheild for airfilters which is a universal item. Wont offer the same benfits as a enclosed filter but with a good cold air feed it could be 80-90% as good at half the price!

As for the manifold there are two options 4-2-1 or 4-1

4-2-1 low to mid range power increases
4-1 mid to high range power increases

The 4-2-1 is more widely avaiable with SuperSprint Janspeed, RaceLand, Sportex and Cituning producing items in either Mild or Stainless steel and are generally slightly cheaper than 4-1's which only GMC and Piper produce.

4-2-1's start about £130ish and go up to about £300 where as 4-1's GMC's is about £250ish and Pipers is closer to £280ish

like above mate strip it out that would make difference

< < < like it says 'VTS on a Diet' because doesnt matter how much power you have a heavy car is still a heavy car.

Like my mate says a 'Fat bird will never catch a moving bus if she's late' kinda off topic but true none the less.

Besides if you are never going to use the back seats why have em? Once they are out the it simply carries on. Increase the power to weight ratio - its free and will make a difference

don't forget the importance of a sticky set of tyres to give you plenty of grip off the standing start.

Makes more of a difference than you'd think.

s1 gear box will change your 0-60 best box to get
  11. #11
I'd not bother with the S1 box Matt on a daily car, too much hastle and a pain on long trips
  12. #12
yeah but performance wise that would improve your 0-60bit shit if you do motorway driving tho
  13. #13
ah, re read it. Bit silly though IMO. Who cares about 0-20mph, its 30-70 where you need the beens and the VTS box is ideal there. 20-100mph in min in 3rd
  14. #14
so would the vts box just slide in nicely?! and would it make much of a difference to the vtr. also would much have to change to put the box in
  15. #15
Ive never driven a 8v so im not sure but alot of people have done the swap and I beleve they are a straight swap :-)
  16. #16
The VTR is one tall box... suited for motorway drives really.
a more commonly available 1.1 box would be better and easier to find.
  17. #17
also on your airfilter try not to use the standard 'L' shaped hose to connect it to the throttle body as this restricts air flow for some reason ... a nice peice or samco hosing and a polished alloy pipe would do a good job and look nice too
  18. #18
ok thanks woodsy. With regards to the gear box, im getting confused! Basically im after more acceleration. im not worried about motorways etc as i dont do that much M-driving. Just want power from 0-100ish!
  19. #19
if its accelleration you are after then you want a shorter ratio box.
  20. #20
vts box then, rallye will be too short
  21. #21
ok cool, and i should have no probs putting vts box in?
  22. #22
You said that you have a s/s peco exhuast on it at the moment, how is it? sound good?

yea mate, it sounds really nice, its got a nice deep throaty growl when at low revs, and when you give it some, its nice, not too loud so doesnt give you a headache! thats best way to describe it!

Personally I think you'd be best off reviewing what it is you plan to do with the car in the long term and build towards that.

Initially you should review the things you have on the car at the moment. I'm sorry to say that Peco & PiperX are hardly best of breed are they?
Changing your gearbox is a big job compared to say changing your PiperX for a Green or BMC enclosed and changing to a 4-1 BTB manifold.
In terms of the performance by £, I think you'd be better off upgrading the items you do already have on the car and flogging off the old ones.
  25. #25
i have a 1.1 box for sale.... there known for the shortest ratios and will definately give you a quicker 0-60 BUT like any other box you will lose top-end
  26. #26
1.1 box has very similar ratios to the VTS box.
1.3 rallye box is know to be the shortest.
  27. #27
nice one guys, so will i notice a massive change by changing the piperx for a bmc as i have been looking to get one.
  28. #28
yer get it stripped like mine nothin but the drivers seat until nxt week :-( then the mrs can come in the car (doh)
