Diesel Mods, are there any?

  1. #1
    Hi Guys,

I have the 1.5XD Mk1 97 model. When I drive it hard, it feels like it has something to give although it feels like I am ringing its neck now and then. I'm still on L-Plates for now, but was wondering, are there any good performance mods out there for the 1.5 Diesel engines that will provide any noticable performance increase?

I am reasonably comfortable with getting my hands dirty, so any tha can be done on the cheap and DIY would be great.

VTS lump. Sorry but i had to say it

It's almost nothing to do with 58 BHP. It's a waste of time and money and maybe you'll only win no more than 5 bhp.

In the other hand, you can do a lot of kilometers without refuelling.

On topic change thekore. Go to scotland forums, there is a thread on fife cruise, meeting at inverkeithing and onto leven tomoro if your up for it!

diesel torque rocks. fit a panel filter and the usual breathing mods (good luck finding a manifold though). maybe look into one of those diesel tuning boxes? apart from that there's not a lot, especially compared to the petrol models.

oakie dokie... as you are probably guessed there isnt an awful lot of basic stuff that can be done to the engine. Firstly there is the usual, decent air filter, uprated manifold as far as im aware doesnt exist, but you could get one custom made.

But the biggy for the 1.5D (as it's mechanically controlled to certain extent) is adjust the fuelling. Unfortunately I know very little about this but basically the amount of fuel going into the engine can be adjusted. although you have to be very careful... too much and there will be some serious black smoke out the end. the good side is that if you're confident enough its free. I understand that there is a little screw that adjusts the fuelling
This should really be done in conjuction with a decent filter though to get the most from it.

Look at up to 20% increase in power.

Sean just to let you know, the tuning boxes, superchips and similar are excellent value and work very well.... but only for Turbo'd Dervs naturally aspirated is a no-no.

Just another thing... a few 1.5D owners have said that putting an open filter (dont ask me how???) on the car saw the 0-60 time drop by a lot, there was even video evidence supplied to back up this claim. standard 0-60 is ~15.8sec
    improved 0-60 was ~12secs.

ah cool. that's handy to know if i ever buy a chip-fat mobile
there is always the option of an engine transplant, one of the pug/citroen turbo diesel engines i'm just not sure which ones if any would be a straight fit.

maybe i could get some kind of filter on mine then... where do i get one form, and where in the engine will it go

usually 30% more power and 40% more torque just from superchipping alone. I was talking to a local motorsport company and they were saying a BMW 335D brand new came in for superchip, it came out and they reckon its quicker than an M3 probably 30-50 and 50-70 but i doubt 0-60. still impressive though.

I started looking into it, then stopped. 1.4HDI (8v and 16v) will apparently fit but it's a sod. custom mounts, custom shafts etc

oh aye my mate had pugeot ecosse do one of their 136bhp conversions on his old 306DTurbo about 4-5 years ago, the torque was immense and it embarrased a lot of more powerful petrol cars.

The blackbox just to right of manifold is the air box... either put an uprated panel filter in or you can by a k&n 57i induction kit that replaces the airbox

right, i have a smart arse telling me that the k&n 57i induction kit wont make any difference to the 1.5d at all.. he said that i would need a super/turbo charger first..

anyone suggets what i should say to him?

tbh i doubt it would make a difference but as i say the vid proved otherwise...

so i suggest to tell him to know what he is talking about.

hrm, so I am stuck with the basics of air filters / full straight through exhaust systems and possible superchipping... I'm going to hold off, have a look around demon-tweaks etc and see what I can find.

K&N airfilter would be nice to look at but Im not spending all that for minimal gain.

Mate a 3.8 second drop in the 0-60 time is a pretty impressive gain i reckon, filters are pretty cheap too

Show me a link to the video evidence and then yes it will be worthwhile, otherwise its a "possibility"
