Diesel Gear Box Or Not!

  1. #1
    Hello there

ive got a saxo vtr mk2 chipped cammed vernier pulley decat etc and ive been told i a diesel gear box out of a 106 or something simular will give me more torque!

And recommendation on what to do!

    Thanks Lpeet

nope there longer than a vtr box. Get either a 1.1, 1.3 rally or a vts box as there all shorter than a vtr box (1.1 and 1.3 arnt that good for motorway driving becasue of high revs)

yeah dont bother with a 1.1 box!!!!

get a VTS box, there lush mate, short ratios and final drive is good

    so suitable for motorway too

1.1 and vts box are pretty much the same

    hmmmm

i dunno what vts are like for motorway driving

    1.1 are really sh*te!!!!

did read a post somewhere what makes a VTS box so good is short ratios and final drive is better than 1.1 so its better for the motorway

a diesel gearbox will give you more torque? Where the hell do these people come from

Torque is created by the engine, not the gearbox.

Get a 106 rallye box with a vts final drive

^ a 106 rallye box's only difference to the VTS box is the final drive though??

My old pug had a standard 106 1.1 gearbox.

My next one i pick up in two weeks has had a diesel box fitted.
If you can wait that long, i'll be able to tell you if theres any real difference when your on the road

Might just be a bit of confusion between giving torque and handling torque! I know a lot of ford bums that have deisel boxes in their s2 turbos because they handle the torque better than a standard box.

all MA 'boxes are the same strength though, so that wouldn't come into it.

gearbox however, does muiltiply the torque...

it does but peek torque will still be the same amount and in the same place.

Either way, it'll make a VTR rubbish everywhere appart from the motorway with derv ratios

vts on a diesel box.. if u can hit limiter in 5th.. u can go 169mph hahaha

thought the derv boxes have little revs, therefore top end is low?

    gearboxes don't rev, engines do.

well i think 5000rpm equates to 110 on the clock, which is about the useful limit of torque on a NA'd derv. but a VTS has higher revs so it can keep going. so 7500rpm (for instance) equates to 165mph.

From what I have read nobody has actually proved the difference in the
    boxes.
I personally think that the cash spend on replacing on VTS/GTi box for
an S1 rallye box could be better spent elsewhere. S1 Rallye boxes will
be expensive and may require refurbing! Plus then there is fitting.

Wouldnt even consider the Diesel box, dont see any obvious benifits.
Research before you buy mate, dont just waste your cash.

Just to add, the GTi/VTS box seems very good as it is. Gearing is spot on.
But 5th is also good for motorway driving. (ish)

I dont suppose someone could open their haynes manual and post the gear ratios of all boxes please
  21. #21
I got the 106 one at home (basic one not the modifying one) would it be in
    there?
  22. #22
    not sure man lol

something I meant to do ages ago, it's in the car now though, and the car is at the garage. If I remember i'll pop along and get it on Monday unless someone posts the ratios up before then.

cheers man, I'm sure I posted them up yonks ago but for life of cant find them serves me right for spamming.
