Can a AirFilter change an Exhaust Note

  1. #1
    Bit of a silly question but . . .

Can a change in AirFilter (Induction style) alter the note that a engine/exhaust makes?

It happened when I had a custom exhaust on my Cougar when I had the OE airbox it made one note and then once Id changed it for an open filter it changed slightly plus it seemed to bubble and pop more with a induction kit.

Same with my S Ive since moved back from an open cone to my Green enclosed and I really think the note has slightly changed (Not much just different).

Oh and its not the overlap of an induction roar over the top of a exhaust note its clearly different?

    Is it possible?

Sounds abit of a but I would like a sensable answer please

it'll change because you're gettin exhaust note and induction note, i had a 4-2-1 manifold, raceland induction kit and a supersprint backbox on my vtr and i could hardly hear the backbox over the raceland!

Hmmmmm, not quite what I meant really - but I do agree with you.

It does yeah! I took off my induction kit today and put the standard airbox back on and my exhaust does seem to be a tiny, tiny bit quieter!

slightly but not by a massive amount. The big change will happen with the combination of the two sounds

Moving from pipercross to a custom filter set up that sits behind the headlight, It make my exhaust slightly louder. didnt really notice a different note though.

so i would say yes, an air filter can effect the sound of your exhaust

On my old car after I fitted an induction kit the exhaust popped and fizzed more when changing down the gears.

My exhausts on the old escorts changed dramatically with an induction filter but the saxo hasn't seen a difference with a replacement filter, havent opted for induction this time.
