Odd filter tip

I was reading through some old car mags i bought years back, you can probably guess which one it was. Anyway in one of them i came across a section that had a different car in each month and how they would modify one, and this one was a saxo VTR.

Most of the parts were lexus lights, devil spoiler etc. But one thing i noticed was a bit different. They reccomended buying a K&N/Green panel filter, then drilling holes in the airbox. Anyone heard of this before? Obviously it would draw in hot air like a normal K&N im guessing, but wondered what peoples opinions were

nail and head mate, just draws in hot air

Wouldnt that mean that basically the open cones are a con as a panel filter would be just as good/bad?

basically yes although some people just buy the open cones for the noise. Open cones are also used on boosted cars where it's less of an issue but in the main the open filters are rubbish.

doing that would just be the same as having a cone filter, theoretically (sp)

thats proper old skol though, my mate had a VW polo and it must have been the first one ever made as it looked older than god and he did the same. then he just took the top of the filter box off completely. it did sound quite good but at the end of the day there was more rust than paint on the car so it wasnt worht spending any cash on it apart from a box of matches and £5 worth of petrol

Yeah I notcied that big jap tuning company project cars like liners and 200sx's always seem to have the green dome open filters rather than enclosed ones which is wierd when they spend so much on everything else.

im not sure but i think that they are able to draw more air in becasue of the massive turbos. my mate has got a 200sx running 350bhp and he has got a HKS open cone filter that cost him £200, so they arnt really that cheap

open cones on a turbo are fine, as when the air goes through the turbo it's compressed and therefore heated up anyway. it then passes through the intercooler and is cooled down that way. still could be worthwhile enclosing a filter on a turbo just not as essential as on n/a

Ah yeah makes sense, cheers lads

I thought turbos ran off the exhaust gas. not from an air intake.

If you have a look at cars that have turbo's that are running open filters they usually have the cone next to some kind of air vent or intake.

The 206 WRC has an open cone on it but on the bonnet is an enclosed box that covers it when it's shut making it an enclosed kit.

Like sean says its not as important on turbo cars as it is on N/A ones

I think people just drill the airbox to get more induction noise. Certainly I cannot see it improving performance

This is an old trick to slighly improve airflow into the airbox with no budget at all - This is simply a 'Pikie' way to improve the performance of your car. As it will only suck in warm air from the engine bay its a false econamy to do this.
