Exhaust Blowing Downpipe..?

   How would i find out where abouts on the downpipe it is blowing. As when i had the car checked a while ago by citroen they said it was blowing in the downpipe and i can hear some hissing and was wondering how easy it would be to find it and use some exhaust gum to seal the hole. Thanks

   when you say downpipe do you mean the pipe from the cat to the center section?

   Im not sure it just says on the sheet downpipe its either the pipe from the cat to the center section or the pipe from manifold to the cat. I dont know where it is though. Is there a way of finding out?

   where is the manifold on your car? Under the car or under the manifold?

   The downpipe goes from the manifold down to your CAT. Its probs blowing on the bend where it goes under the engine.

   The manifold is the bit that comes off the block, 4 pipes which go into one. Its under the heatshield.

   Its under the car, I think it maybe where the cat joins the pipe to the backbox, i have put on one of those exhaust jubilee clips but i dont think it is helping and i want to stop the hissing makes the car sound even worst as its a 1.1

   Use some of that exhaust weld stuff, it works and should stop the noise

   the jubilee clips arent the best connection in the world but unless the pipes arent lined up it shoudnt be that. Check the end of the pipes where the bell is welded on as this often produces holes. Put some gumgum around this and then see

    Doesnt that mean that if the CAT needs changing how would they undo the exhaust weld stuff?

    dont use gumgum to seal the joint between the two pipes, just the ends of the pipe where the 'bell' is (the bit before the end of the pipe)

    Well from the CAT to the backbox pipe its not welded. The cat pipe goes inside the backbox pipe and his being help together by one of those stupid exhause clamps. If i use that exhaust gum would that stop it and how would they be seperated if they needed to be?

    Is the clamp tight? Try tightening the bolts as i had this problem and tightened mine and seemed to work..

    its tight i dont want to tighten it any more incase it snaps the bolts off. As i have snapped one of these clamps before.

    yer i know what you mean the join between them two pipes is crap. You can use the gumgum over that join and it can easily be removed with it on. Its not like a glue it just a hard sealant

    I thought once it gets hot it goes like cement? If i tighten the clamp as much as i can then ill put some gum around the join to stop any hissing. Just want to make sure it can be removed if it ever needs to be removed.

    centre box? as in the CAT? I dont know what it is to be honest just thought it could be the join the print out shitroen gave me never said where the blowing was it just said the downpipe.

    its does harden alot but it breaks off easily if you pull apart the pipes.
    
    Try puting some gum around each end of the center box where the pipe is as this is a weak part of the exhaust system

    nope the center box is between the cat and the back box.. you should have two exhaust boxes on your system if its standard. If the print out says the down pipe then use some gum on that first.

    well i only have one box. Manifold goes down to the CAT then the CAT goes to the backbox. Its standard 1.1 1997.

    the downpipe is the bit the goes from the 4 pipes of the manifold down to the cat. Thats what citroen are referring to

    Yep thats right. No its not difficult just make sure that you havent been driving the car anythime before doing it as the pipes will be red hot

    start the car, open the bonnet and have a listen. If its rusted out it will most likely be blowing on the bend where it bends to go under the sump..

    will i be able to feel with me hand where the air is blowing from? Would it be blowing from where the bend joins the pipe to the CAT? as there is a screw clamp with springs could it be blowing from here?

    Yeah you could feel it with your hand easily. U nkow where the pipe goes under the engine, well there's a bend just before that so it can go under the engine, its prob blowing from there. Yeas it could be blowing fromthe clap with the springs on..

    should i just put gum around the clamp with springs? and on the bend if there is blowing and the on both sides of the CAT if it is blowing there. Cheers Will let you know how i get on tomorrow.

    Yeah if its blowing from the bend or each end of the cat use that gum. If its from the clamp with the springs try tightening it up and id you have no luck with tightening it up just put gum around the join, dont put any over the bolts..
