are good cams needed in this situation

i am in the prosess of turboing my saxo vts it had already had head work done. only just found out yesterday that it isnt cammed up so what would you suggest are the best cams to run with a turbo
  2. #2
Kent PT51s as you'll not get any blow through
  3. #3
Whats blow through (Might sound silly but i aint got a clue)
  4. #4
when the inlet and exhaust valve are open at the same time and the boosted air just flows through

PT51s are about as wild as I've seen without that issue. Though I know of someone trying 708s. Will it work?

SHould find out in a few weeks
  6. #6
be interesting to see the results if Sean goes through with the 708's

It will. I was talking to Keir about this (a man who is fairly dull with his in depth knowledge of TU engine cams!) and he reconned the 708 would suffer blow through

I should be nicer to Keir, I've got his Rallye while mines in the garage being sorted

keir used to visit here a lot then disappeared though he seems to have disappeared from SSC as well these days.

Suppose a little blow through could be fine if the greater gain was there. Im sure some people were talking of just using the 708 inlet cam and standard exhaust cam. Or i may have been drunk.

    I recall hearing that too.

Keir isn't online that much, his job is a lot more demanding these days. As an update, he's alive, well and has just bought his first place. I'm sure you'll see him (again?) soon

aye hes done some very artful dodging at various car shows through the years.

Ahem any way cams did kent not do special grinds at some point as well?

If your running a turbocharger, is it worth camming?

With decent airfilter and exhaust setup for turbo application then Im not sure the extra power from the cams is worth the money. After all there is only so much power you can lay down on the road.

Id say stick to the blower and maybe spend the money on decent tyres instead

i was going to fit some cams to the vts engine in the vtr, wasnt sure weather to or not, its either going to be supercharged again or a turbo this time. still not sure. i was put off a while back when i herd about some cams being to wild and get blow threw when on boost. would be interesting to see if the cat cams are ok lol

so would i be right in saying that the safest bet is to get Kent PT51s . will there be any difference without the kent cam noticable difference that is
  14. #14
what about pt50s? or get some special grind cams with higher lift but not as long duration.

i currently have an all too standard vtr mk2. Was just wondering with a manifold, s.steel exhaust, induction kit and cams would these give good powergains along with an ecu remap of course? wot difference will the cams make? cheers guys
  16. #16
i honestly wouldnt go for an induction kit. after about 4 different types im going back to standard air box with panel filter. if you think about it, companies spend millions researching engine design so i doubt an aftermarket airfilter is going to be better.
also a vtr only has 1 cam. and if you are handy with spanners you could do an engien conversion yoruself for less than buying them parts and have the same power standard.

Interesting man, I remember you saying a few months ago that the open seemed to let the engine rev a freer. just out of interest what are your reasons for going back to standard? are you going for an 'uprated' panel filter?
  18. #18
yeah ad, the open seemed to let it rev a bit better but whether this was my thinking it was or it was actually improving i dont know.
its a bit of a long story, i was thinking about selling teh car but have now changed my mind and decided to change some of the 'uprated' parts for standard. as i said, they will spend £££££££ on research and developement on the cars, a lot more than any airfilter manufacturer will so have decided on standard airbox with ITG panel filter. have also goen back to standard exhuast, standard suspension but going to fit H&R 25mm springs, 24mm arb (106 gti), got standard brakes on at the min but think i might put some 266mm brakes on.
