Re-trimming door cards (Progress so far) updated 16-03-2007

  1. #1
I fitted 106 GTI seats to my VTR october last year. I got the 106 doors cards with them, but after seeing progress guides of Predator_VTR I thought I would have a go at re-trimming mine.

    My seats

    Standard door card

    Middle part removed for re-trimming

After taking off the original material, most of the foam backing was left behind

The foam was then sanded off

Then new black faux suede material was attached using spray glue

While the door card was off, I have remove the door pin, and used a gommit to fill the hole

Thats all I have done so far, hopefully will be back on it at the weekend

As you said in your threads I've left as much of the plastic as I could, then I'm going to use an old soldering iron to melt it, hopefully that will be enough.

It's not the lycra one, had a sample of it but it seemed to thin didn't want it soaking up the glue and comeing through.

ahhhh ok mate, still a pain to trim aint they lol, i got the passenger one done 1st time and the drivers one took 3 attemps

you using bits of plastic to melt back on then, i did mine with tie wraps and 2 clamps
  7. #7
Yeah they are. Theres a few very small creases on the tight curve by the higher pocket, but with it being black they are hard to see.
  8. #8
yeah mate mines not perfect but as you say you cant really tell unless you actually know were they are
  9. #9
I did this on my old vtr, not easy!

Well done for doing it yourself if you have patience you get there in the end

    Yesterdays progress.

Back of door card showing the remains of the plastic pegs which will hold it together

The tops of the plastic pegs were melted with a soldering iron, and where there was not enough plastic left cable ties were melted instead.

    First one complete

    Finished :d :d

Just got to do the same all over again for the other one

You have the doorcard (plastic bit) and the bit the material sits on.

When you serperate these two they are connected by plastic lugs which i cut off, there fore when it came to putting them back together i had nothing to do so....

By hand just with some rough sand paper, the sander that i've got was too big to use, just brushed off all the loose bit before I spayed the glue seemed to stick fine.

I left as much of the plastic pegs on as I could, when re-fitting I melted what was left with a soldering iron to attach the to parts back together (pics in post #10)

cool, just another question, how did ya get the middle section out? did you cut the lugs on the back off? am gonna give it a blast the morrow as i have ma drvers doorcard off.

Just used a stanley knife to trim the outside edge off each peg where it overhangs the card, just enough so that it is realsed, leave as much plastic as possible so it can be melted when re-fitting.

At £25 a door I'd get them to do it.

I was never very happy with how the turned out,
so now using the cards from a 1.1 Desire (think Pred did the same)
