Modifying rear seats to take HeadReats

  1. #1
I want to make the rear seat in my car be able to take headrests.

My rear seats look like this:

I want to add one head rest to either side of the center.
I am going to be using sourced leather headrests from the front of another car.

Does anyone know how to do this?
  2. #2
dont know matey, never heard of anyone trying to do this so may be difficult getting advice, just do an attempt mate lol
  3. #3
hmm, you may need to get some piping with clossed ends on one end and insert em in the drilled holes on the rear seats, then modify the ends of the head rest stalks so that they will grip the inner side of the piping and therefore staying where they are, eg, like the cigarete lighter attachments on sat navs, mobile phone chargers etc...

or you could take apart a front seat and use them bits lol

prob not gonna be easy if your making it yourself tbh!

Drill a couple of holes and stick em in! sorted

    /agree with Claire
  6. #6
lol, rem mate...you never do anything simple do ya lol
  7. #7
i would of thought those seats would have had headrests in the first place, only saxo seats that split are the vts ones arent they? and they have head rests
  8. #8
they are from a 106 sxi or something Matt, or so i read a thread somewhere.

unless that was someone else lol
  9. #9
They are from a 106 quicksilver orignally i think.
I bought them re-trimmed but want to fit leather headrests with DVD Screens.

They are mostly for show not function (as a safety device)

Are there any regulations they need to meet?
  10. #10
i dont think drilling holes is an option, thre just going to move about in the foam and not be very good and quite dangerous as they need to be locked in, could try contacting re trimming places like schaffino leather etc

    super glue hehe
  12. #12
lol you can tell your from the north east claire hehehe

i dont think i would drill holes as i wouldnt want a head rest with two rods hurtling towards me in a crash
  13. #13
I know someone who did this to a nova.

They cut a slit in the seat and put a U shaped hollow bit of metal that the head rest "legs" would sit in, then used some loctite 401 to stick the foam to the metal tubing.

They look alright as the headrest covers the stiched up slit. but they arnt very sturdy and you cant pull them out.

re-trimmers. no. (it cant be that hard)

So i went on ebay and found this:
    http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/SAXO-REAR-HEAD...QQcmdZViewItem

Has anyone ripped a front seat apart to see how their headrests sit in place?
  17. #17
well i meant ask them how they do headrests in seats, you dont have to buy its just a question for them
  18. #18
buy a vts rear bench with headrest already there, change the covers over and then have the head rests covered
  19. #19
thats a point scott forgot there just covers lol
  20. #20
Theres no head rests in the VTS ive seen:

I want it so i can fit DVD screens to the rear seats
  21. #21
one idea is to extend the headrest poles so they go all the way through the back of the seat the use some sort of plate on the outside to stop them being pulled back up ( you wont see the plate), then add stuffing to the holes to stop them moving about. see sexy diagram i made for you

mk1 vts interior has headrests mate and is split 60/40
  23. #23
can use Mk1 VTS or the 106 ones mate as long as there split folding
  24. #24
all vts interiors have rear headrests.

However your plan to put in screens does really discount the vts headrests due to their physical size, still think vts rear bench with front head rests stuck in them is the way forward
  25. #25
What i want to do is make them accomodate front head rests as the screens come prefitted in their headrest which just slots in and all i need to do is run power to them and a video RCA
  26. #26
yeh a know scott but he wants screens and some of them i think its mk2 vts ones have ones that go right down if you catch my drift

like this (on ebay by the way)

if he already has the headrests though you just need the backs of a split folding rear seat with the headrest holes in

get to a scrappy doesnt really matter about condition as your replacing the covers anyway
  27. #27
    cheers bud

I only need to buy the top parts then.

Ben. When you going scrappy next?
  28. #28
is it abit pointless putting screens in the rear headrest as you won't see it
  29. #29
they came free with a sunvisor dvd package i got.
  30. #30
Umm not sure if this is too late, but. . .

Has the seat back got a zip running along the bottem? if so it will be a hel of a lot easier. . . If not it will be hand stiched allong the bottem edge which u may have to cut and re sew, Either way you need to take the mterial off.

Once there if i were doing it id peel the top of the foam back, and screw the head rest posts to the back of the seat. Only problem with this way is they wont be height adjustable.

If the seats are vinal ar leather you willl be able to make two little cuts for the posts to go through without the edges freying.

Hope you under stand that. . . and that its of some help at all

i say just put the screens in the front headrests mate, why bother with rear headrest ones , there gonna be the same either way with that back seat if you put them in the fronts, people can see them in the back and people can see them when you open the boot at shows etc
