106 gti exhaust question

  1. #1
Well, not having the 106 gti long i started thinking its lost power but put it down to be just getting used to the car. Then i started thinking its deffinetly lost power and also sounds a bit crappy (exhaust loudish) -

thinking back when i parked up on a slanted slope i heard a loud noise underneath like a scrape noise, it seems i have wrecked the centerbox thing thus making it blow a bit.. would this be enough for me to notice power loss?

Also, what is the name of it? middle box? center box? and how much do you think i could pick one up for?

    big thanks in advance

standard centre sections can be had for sub 50 quid fitted.

It could potentially be loosing you power but impossible to really say how much or where in the rev range etc...

    Hi Leo.

Is this the standard exhaust you are refering to, or an aftermarket one? I don't know if there is a specific wording for the areas, but most aftermarket systems are split into 3 parts: Backbox -> center section -> cat bypass pipe. The center section will have another type of silencer on it. Is this the part that you think you have broken? And yes, if your exhaust has a big enough blow, and is close to the exhaust manifold, you could lose back pressure, causing loss of power.

Hehe, there wasn't really any need for the video, but nice one anyway! Basically, It's impossible to tell from the sound, as the quality is too poor. Anyhow, I would say it's it's blowing... Looking at the pictures, you can clearly see the build up of gases. (black marks)

The easiest way to tell, is just run your hand all along the exhuast. There shouldn't be any blowing, and if there is, you'll feel it straight away!

yeh i did that and you can feel it. my old man says its been pushed in/dented which has left a gap and its blowing from there. when he said that i rememberd what i mentioned above, that scape noise underneath when i went up a slope.

any idea where to get a "center box" ? have looked on ebay etc with no luck

You hopefully won't need to mate. Just take the car to an exhaust garage (local, small business ones are best) and ask them to take a look for you. You might find it's just the seal, and they will fix that for you and prbably charge you a fiver... Best of luck mate, let me know how you get on.
