hi all just got another vtr after a 2 years so i aint been on here in a while .
i have a real struggle to get into 1st and 2nd gear , its cluncky and loose and even worse on a cold frosty morning but then 3rd 4th 5th are loose but have no problems ,i have had 2 vtr's with this same problem ,i took it to a citreon workshop and asked if it was a common fault in these cars..........the puzzled look on his face said it all. my first vtr was a r reg mrk 1 with 90k on the clock so i just put it down to the age of the car but now i have w reg mrk 2 with 52k on the clock and theres no difference....... do i need a new gearbox or is it a simple fix, what do i look for ,im geussing a new gearbox is going to be expensive ??????

any help is great guys ty

    hi mate,

its probably the linkages or also could be low gearbox oil...

my always grinds when going into 2nd gear on cold mornings but is fine after a few miles once things have warmed up

I got a box and clutch change (always best to change the clutch at the same time) cost me a ton for a second hand box and 80 for a clutch, plus 100 to fit both....came to just short of three hundred notes...but i wouldn't do that just yet, I would check all your linkages to make sure 1 isn't bent, then i would drop the transmission fluid and put new in, see how it goes when you've done that, i left mine when i started getting problems like your having and in the end the gearbox just collapsed inside itself, which, inturn destryoed the clutch....you'll know when the box has gone because it will be like a bag of marbles in a jam jar

wow fast respones ok to show off my n00b skills ....... how do i get to the linkages and oil. im a computer geek not a car nut
think i will have to invest in a haynes manual heh

linkages are at back of engine easier to get to from underneath

use a 13mm spanner to lever them off

the gearbox oil drainer is at the loswest point of the box on the back of it

its a sqaure key but you can use a adjustable on it or spanner if you have right size i cant remeber what size

when topping the gearbox oil back up or checking to see if theres enough in

take passenger wheel off and on the end of the the gearbox theres a 17mm or 19mm nut undo that and if oil leeks out its full if none comes out top it up stop filling when it leeks out

a haynes manual will help alot

Mine is whirring alot when in 3rd,4th and 5th. I'm 99.8% sure that my passenger driveshaft needs replacing. The car has done 125,120k on same box and clutch so i'm worrying that i need new box, clutch and shaft.... what would you do? cheers

you have done VERY well to last that long on a standard clutch

    does the clutch feal fine

sounds like the box whats whining but its hard to diagnose it without hearing it so id maybe get someone to look at it

yeah i know i've been luck for it to last this long. i'm getting bit worried because i'm going camping at the weekend and i dont wanna get there to find my car wont let me get back.

Clutch feels ok. Its starting to click when engaging gears though. but i'm unsure if a dodgy cv joint or dhaft would be to blame.

took it to my friends dad who happens to be a mechanic and apparently all should be fine. clutch is apparently on its way out but not in urgent need of replacing as yet.... Luckily the girlfriend is an AA member
