engine temp

whats the normal temp for a saxo, as im used to crap cars that dont heat up easy lol. recently temp went thru the roof so changed the thermostat and drained rad and filled with coolant. and im sure its fixed but even in the mornings when its cold it take about 2min drive to go straight to half way and sits there. i know normal cars temp sit half way and are fine but it gets there so quick its scary!!! im just worryin my head gaskets gone as it smells a bit sometime when put the heater on and also get grey smoke from exhaust even when its hot.but might just be as its cold outside but thats my biggest fear on cars the dreaded head gasket!

    Cost me £600 on a 1.4 8valve corsa!

do a compression test bud the compression will be down on maybe 1 or 2 of the cyclinders will tell if ur headgasket is gone

My VTS takes about 10min to get to normal, wish it was 2! Oil takes longer, as you'd expect. Grey smoke isn't right. They are prone to headgasket failure so as dingle says, a compression test would be a good idea. Does it lose coolant?

The temp should only go over half way (and not much) 1)stuck in heavy traffic and 2)when exiting a motorway where the engine has been running for a longtime at constant revs then coming to a stop.

At all other times it shouldnt really edge any higher than halfway.

Get a garage to do a dye test which test for CO2 (exhaust gases) in your coolant system ie Head Gasket.

Hmm.. Most cars make steam out the back when the engine is cold and when the air outside is cold even if the engine is warm, you sure it isn't steam?
