how much acceleration lost with a vtr gearbox in a vts? will have 2" decated pipe to magnex back box with no centre silencer if it makes any diference.
vtr gearbox in vts??

#2slows you down a bit in terms of acceleration but you gain slightly in top speed. also takes the vts engine out of the powerband. wouldn't advise it unless you were getting the vtr 'box cheaply and were desperate.
-
#3I wouldnt. As sean says, it not worth it as itll detract from acceleration a bit.
Just get a cheapo 1.1 box, similar ratios to a VTS box anyway. If youre worried about mpg on the motorway, just change out 5th for a diesel of VTR one. -
#4can you change the 5th? not arguing i'm actually curious as to whether this can be done as i'm led to believe it couldnt?
-
#5Yeah you can change 5th, dead easy actually. 1st to 4th are part of one gear cluster. Two mins I think I have pics.

Not the best of pics but...
On the second pic, you can see the one-piece gear cluster, its the lower of the two. The two splined parts at the ends of the shafts, on the right, is where 5th sits. Pop it off with a bearing separator and you can change them about. -
#7the vtr box wont make you drop out the power band on gear changes, as all the sport models use the same cluster the rev drop between gears is the same.

#85th gear on

and off

#9Changing 5th gear, is actually really interesting.
-
#10gabb - just thought, vtr uses same cluster as vts, so you would need to swap it for a non 'sport' 5th gear.
-
#11Thats weird, the VTR boxes Ive had apart have had taller 5ths, forget the tooth numbers, but equates to 0.767 instead of the 0.85 of the VTS box.
-
#12i remember seein a 106gti in max power i think where the owner was using a 1.4 gearbox to make up for the 18" wheels, whys this?
-
#13I wont start a thread for this Q because the people with the answers will no doubt look here...
Whats the best box/ratio to improve the accel in 4th & 5th - Or should i say where do i go to get the cogs swapped???? (dont know anything about gearboxes) -
#14fit an S1 106 rallye box if you want out and out acceleration, but why do you want acceleration in 4th and 5th gears?
-
#15you cant swap just 4th.
