ANtyre

Right all just bought some 16s for my saxo, it came with 195/45 ANtyres, to me these tyres dont grip at all, covered 300miles in them and still no grip, when i had my old vtr aloys on i could hit a certain corner at 90mph, today i hit it at 40 and span the car out, now to me i think its the tyres, what do you all think as i have been to 3 garages and none of them seem to know what it is, except one saying get better tyres, but surly these tyres wouslnt mean i could do less speed around corners? i mean the speed is halfed.....

    bad driving?
  3. #3
could be all sorts of things, your driving, tyres, tyre pressure, the road etc etc
  4. #4
    tyres
    driving road
    conditions
bigger wheels wont handle as well

These are all very likely. Also, lower profile will give worse handling if the road is not smooth. I sometime crap myself going round corners were the road is bumpy, as the wheels often bounce!

If the tyres are new, they do take a little while to get rid of the outer coating, but if you've done 300 miles, I would expect that to be more than enough... Hmm... Get some decent rubber mate. Toyo Proxes T1 R's are cheap for 16" alloys and give fantastic grip.

toad what size wheels you running?

    16" too.

EDIT: Quick a few pics in my noob thread -> http://www.saxperience.com/forum/showthread.php?t=73621

nice mate, reason i asked i have 16"40 profile. how much were your proxes and where did you get them. in need of two fronts

when my car was on 15s it handled fookin ace... now on 16's not as good... and its on the same tryes.... i have no idea wot this is... but i found the exact same problem mate.....

but surly wheel size cant effect handling
  10. #10
it does yeah. 15inch is the best size to have on a saxo, for accelaration and handling.

Kind of. It's a lot to do with what's known as 'unsprung weight.' So, it's typical that the bigger wheel will weigh more. I don't think 16" are crazy big for the 106 / Saxo, but most 15" applications will be a better choice. I'm currently looking for some 15" superleggera alloys for track days. Believe it or not, a 15" superleggera alloy, weighs almost HALF of one of my 16" superturismo WRC alloys!!! And mine are not overly heavy for an alloy either!

With regard to your question about the Proxes, I'm still using the ones that came with my wheels. But if you need some, just use google mate! There's a few places selling them on the Net. I think 195/40/R16 Proxes T1 S's are going for about £55 a corner. I think that's pretty cheap for what you get!

Well i dont know what to say, only i am doing half the speed i was normally capable of on these roads, and its not my driving, and not my tyre pressures, surly 16s wont give me like half the grip/handling i get from my standard VTR alloys.

    Can anyone recommend tyres 195/45/16?

I had Yokohomas on my last VTR and they griped like shit to a blanket, but I simply cant afford them any more after all my cash has gone into this VTR.

These are what i have been quoted so far.

    Avons - £50 a tyre
    Pirelli - £60 a tyre

Anyone know any other prices/makes? I want grip and am so clueless on what tyres i need.

Or should i just get 40s? And will they help grip......lol you can tell I dont know nothing, guess thats why i am here....

so many questions, i have asked aswell

    Cheers guys

195/45 is the wrong profile for 16" on your car anyway! You need a 40 profile to maintain the same diameter of the original set up! Right now, your car will be sitting higher off the ground, and your speedo will be telling you are going slower than you are actually going! LOL, whatch out for the speed cameras mate! I already suggested tyres...

Yeah i know they are wrong size but will the 40s do anything for my grip?

Wish i got my speedo done before my 0-60 runs

Yes and No I'm afraid. Read what I said earlier.

Right i read that mate good post by the way. How good are them tyres then? think they would give better grip than same Yokohomos and pirellis.

if your gonna change them go for fortys. the tyres yo have on now ive never heard of them, prob some cheap budget poo. youll keep your rolling diameter then but wont be as good on bumpier surface due to thinner tyre wall. out of the two though forty would be better

Question answered, thanks! I don't know how good the other tyres are, sorry. I do know that the Proxes that I'm using give a lot of grip though!
