Crankcase breather thingie?

    Hi.

Please see this picture I just took:

Am I right in thinking that the hot oil vapour coming out from there, is just sucked into the throttle body? If so, wouldn't it make more sense to add one of those mini filters and seperate it from the induction kit? After all, the point of the kit is to get cold air into the TB, so what's the big idea here? Or, shall I just get a catch tank?

catch tank not just a oil breather filter.. that coughs shit everywhere
  3. #3
they put the oil vapour back in as standard for polution ans shite like that

id maybe put a catch tank on it

you could put a little filter on but would look tacky
  4. #4
OK... So I'm guessing that inducting oil vapour into the TB is not the smartest of ideas?

    its fine 2bh..

    Please explain...

    it doesnt matter imo..
if it would cause probs the engine wouldnt be designed like that from standard.

I get what you are saying, ta. One possibly issue though, and that is the induction kit isn't standard. I don't know if the oil vapour was chucked straight back into the TB like that before. Or even if it was, was it filtered in any way? Having cleaned the insides of the samco hosing a few times, I've noticed oil that's run up towards the TB. I'm just thinking, do you really want that crap going into the TB... For 2 reasons I suppose, 1) It clogs the butterfly up, and 2) you have a slightly different % of air / oxygen being inducted to normal, clean air.

as standard it recircualtes into the induction system.
its why most aftermarket induction kits come with the little nozzle to attach the breater pipe to recirculate.

it is if you want to save the planet but not if you are building a performance engine.

The oil vapour lowers the octane of the fuel hurting power output.

There is a reason why all race cars route the vapour to an oil catch tank then vent to atmosphere

it wont do any damage to the engine itself by running it there though..

catch tank is deffo the best option and can be made cheaply

Thank you all for the answers. I'm glad I've got a better understanding of this now.

it won't damage the engine no.. but you will lose power.

When I get round to it I will be fitting a catch tank to catch the excess oil & vapour from the rocker breather (VTR), I have first hand experience of rocker breather filters leaking oil over the shop

This is what I intend to buy, Ebay catch tank.

I need to investigate what size hose/length etc is supplied along with best postion to mount it but this seems to be the best solution to this problem.

Anyone have any pics of this catch tank?
Im not actually sure what it looks like/does if that helps?
  16. #16
the oil vapour condenses inside rather than splattering all over the engine bay..
  17. #17
I don't know a whole lot about these catch tanks. Can anyone help recommend one for my car? Many thanks.
  18. #18
    Anyone at all?
  19. #19
whole host of them on fleabay, just type in 'catch tanks', one from about £35-£50.
  20. #20
OK, ta. Will have a good butchers.
  21. #21
or just be ultra hard core and route it into the top side of a coke bottle and drill a hole in the bottle top and stick on a breather filter. One hell of a cheap catch tank

sorry not trying to hi jack the thread but i have a 106 gti with a catch tank and filter, and the oil vapour doesnt condense in the catch tank - it comes out of the filter. anyone no why this is?

    thanks gareth

Okay is this a catch tank:

If it is, then I still have no idea how its going to look in the engine bay!
  24. #24
yes rushy that's a catch tank, that's why it says 'oil catch tank' on the wrapper

    bottom right of the pic:

    The silver circle doodaar thing?
Thanks Sean, very knowledgable as usual.
  26. #26
yes the circular thing, obviously if you had an enclosed air filter you'd have to move it a bit but you get the idea.
  27. #27
so would you have to put a filter on the other pipe sticking out??

like pipe going to breather from catch tank and filter on the other one??
  28. #28
think so yes or you could leave it like that one
  29. #29
i would have to put a filter on for piece of mind, there quite simple really, dont think theres any point in having one on a VTR is there ??
  30. #30
not really but they look nice if you're into the bufty side of things
  31. #31
lol a may get one when i run out of ideas

I don't think they actually condense anything. They are there just to catch oil if your engine fooks up. So, you're not really doing any good for the enviroment... Someone please correct me if I'm wrong!
  33. #33
On the plus side for us however, performance should be improved.
  34. #34
there should really be baffles inside for the air to move around as you want the oil and air to separate before it reaches the filter. I made one and used those metal wire wool scouring brushes inside.

    Worked fine.
