Mk2 VTS engine on Mk1 VTS Loom?

  1. #1
My engines broke and I’m thinking about doing a swap…

Will a Mk2 VTS engine fit on a Mk1 VTS engine loom? I’ve been offered 5 low mileage Mk 2 engines so far… there doesn’t seem to be any Mk1 engines about.
I always thought that both 16V lumps were the same apart from some device/valve on the Mk2s that reduces emissions?
    Is that the only difference?
Are all the sensors the same?
Are all the sensors in the same place?
    Anyone done this before?

Thanks any help will be greatly appreciated!

Are the sensors fine in your old engine? If so you should be able to use the Mk2 engine, sack off thje EGR and then replace any sensors that don't match with the ones off your old setup. Bingo Bango, it should work

Yeah all working fine! Thanks! will all the sensors fit? and are they in the same place? will the wires reach?

should be, you'll need to block up any like the cam sensor that you don't need

will be a striaght swap. just block off the 'egr' hole.

Thanks! I could probs do with a hand! Do you know if the engine will come out the top of the bay? I did some measurements before and dont think I'll be able to get the car high enough to get it out from under the car - my axle stands only go up 48cm.

it will come out the top. or you can use the engine hoist to lift the car up.

I think the Camshaft sensor is on 2001 cars, just to the left of the end of your induction kit samco matey

its an earth of some sort

    no camshaft sensors on them.
  13. #13
I'm sure its not an earth. Cables are too thin.

Camshaft sensor is mentioned in the Haynes, only on very late models though. God knows what it does, gay multiplex 3 plug shite

its definetly not a sensor on the side of the cam cover, i knew what it was but cant remeber. has no probe or anything on it. + the cam has nothing for it to get any position from.

+ the single plugs also have that thing on.

just thought, ive done cams in all years off vts' from 98 to 2002 and all them are teh smae. only difference in heads is egr and some have allen bolts instead of torx. never ever seen a cam sensor.

    my sept 2002 engine

hmmm, tooo be continued after the weekend then You're probably right, am sure it said in the Haynes that it was a cam sensor

it would need somewhere to read the cams position from though.

try and get long ropes and lift it by the wishbones. you can lift it by the slam panel but make sure you spread the weight.
