How-To-Guide: H.I.D Conversion

  1. #1
Right, now I've managed to get a HID kit that works properly, the time has come to get this Kit on and looking, ultimately sweet. I just bought a kit off Ebay (bi-xenon) and opted for the 8000k badboys. Have previously fit one as I mention earlier, but the bulbs didn't work and although advertised as bi-xenon, the dipped beam was just a regular bulb, and the Full Beam was HID. When purchasing one of these kits, check what the H4 bulb looks like as if there are 2 bulbs per unit, avoid. Simply one bulb, and thats the one you want, High and low from one bulb. I can recommend these ones though.

    Right, first thing is first:

    1. Examine the contents, don't assume it's as easy as that.. this shit took me a good 2 hours to do properly.

    2. Remove your current bulbs from the headlight. This means unplugging the cable going into the back of the current bulb. After removing the cable, take off the black rubber surrounds.

Loosen the screw you can see to remove the spring which keeps the bulb in place and take out the bulb:

Put new HID bulb into the headlight and re-affix with the spring. On my kit, this took me 35 mins to do the passenger side one. The drivers side was fine -went in straight away, but this one took aaaages to re-clip back into place.

When I fit this kit, because of the size of the rear of these bulbs, I couldn't manage to put the black rubber surround back on.

Next, is to secure the ballasts in place.

This took the longest time of all. Trying to find a good place that wasn't moving, didnt get hot or didn't vibrate in a crammed engine bay with nothing to secure anything... at all, was a nightmare. Below are where i found decent spots to put them. both with a few holes in the car body i was able to utilise:

And here. With both of these places, I managed to secure them with thick bolt and because they (kinda) hanging, they wont knock against the body of the car at all. The cables for the ballast tucked nicely between the radiator and the slam panel to the headlight bay:

Once this hurdle was over with, next is to bring in the cables. It's pretty simple stuff this, just refer to the instructions if you have to. Connect everything up. Just feed cables through (i used underneath the air filter pipe inside the top of the slam panel:

Connect the relay harness up to the battery. It also connects to the HID kit, but the battery is like:

Tidy all cables so none are loose near working parts as follows:

    Cut finger cutting cable tie...

Cross your fingers and try the lights:

    Yeah Boiiiiii!

Driving is SERIOUSLY improved in the dark with this kit. Visibility is awesome, and I know the 8000k are meant to be too blue (and they kinda do look it from the pics) but when they have charged up after few initial seconds, the look white when looking head on. Very, very white. In car, looks a little more blue, but you kinda cant ddecide whether its a pure white or bluey, its that hard to tell. Get one. Now.

Any questions, drop me a pm.

just been out on the roads in the dark for first time. Got into dome traffic and came up right behind 2 cop cars at seperate places. Nothing. This is Manchester though, cops have got bigger fish to fry (I've even been pulled doing 54 in a 30 mile an hour dual carriageway and had only a warning).

I do have the lights adjusted as low as they go, so not glaring, or blinding. They just look so cool though. I have seen a type-R around here with 12000k HID's (Very, VERY blue/purple), and he's had them a while now. It's not down to the law as such, just big-ego cops who have nothing better to do than press their power.

Glad everyone likes my first how-to-guide.

The whole kit was off ebay from a company called XLS. I highly recommend these. They are the bi-xenon kit (dipped and full beam). They were around £80 plus postage. You can choose the colours you want for the lights. I'd go for 6000k (white) or 8000k (white/blue) as the limit (same as mine), any higher and your getting into "please pull me over" colours. Don't know if Halfordds sell them (doubt it), but every retailer (ie, shop) are all charging between (£150-250) for exactly the same thing. Go ebay - even if you hate using it. XLS are good and quick.

The ballasts are basically a power unit that charges up the power from the battery to something ridiculous like 12500 volts and then releases it slowly to the bulbs (i think). These bulbs however use only 35watts to give more power and light out than standard 55w halogen bulbs. Less power to give more light ... go figure that one out. The main difference is that the bulbs don't have a filament like standard bulbs, they use an arc of light from 2 points - meaning they will also last more than the life of the car.

If you are fitting these kits (or any bulbs) DO NOT TOUCH THE BULB WITH YOUR FINGERS. This leaves oil on the surface of the bulb, which heats up and can damage the bulbs.

Not sure about the angel eyes, but make sure they are right fitment eg H4, H1 etc.

If you don't want to go for HID but still want blue lights, you can't, but the nearest things I have found are Ring Sportzblue 100w and Ice white bulbs (not LED's) for the sidelight. Get both of these from Autobulbs Direct.

When did HID become illegal? Or has it always been?

Imnot planing on HID but it seems f*&king stupid the police would do you for having HID - My eyes go fuct when i get glared but i see cars with HID all the time and it doesnt effect me....

Any real reason why there being fazed out?
  22. #22
They fail MOT's and arn't classed as safe anymore.
  23. #23
    just the conversions?

as most expensive cars use HID..
  24. #24
Yeah, the headlight units themselves have reflectors whereas on Mercs and BMWs for example, have housing which direct the light rather than it being scattered apparently. I havent really adjusted mine any more than what they were with halogens. Dipped pretty low (on lowest setting too), don't glare or scatter, I have a perfect alignment. As noted above, I pulled behind cops twice and nothing happened. As long as you sort out the angle of light and where its going, I don't see a problem. Try adjusting the lights in an open car park at night and fiddle with the allen key on top of headlight as well as the white plastic nozzle to align the lights properly. Try it and you'll see what I mean. Keep it as low as poss, on lowest setting on dash - that way you can always raise them up if you need to (country lanes etc). Just a thought...
