More Stopping Power Needed

  1. #1
I have changed from 1.1 calipers to VT* calipers, brembo disks and green stuff pads, still not totally convinced that it has made too much difference though. What else can i do to improve the braking, braided hoses, master cylinder???

Any input would be greatly appreciated....
  2. #2
bigger brakes, ie 206 gti brakes
  3. #3
Yeah, bigger brakes. The 306 gti-6 setup is a good one. Not really needed though if you only have a 1.1 Unless of course you've done a conversion.
  4. #4
    ok... without replacing the brakes...lol
  5. #5
yea, conversion is on it's way, just gettin brakes/suspension, ready for it...

lol why the hell do people say this? At 60 MPH, a child walks out in front of you. It doesnt matter how big your engine is, you still need to stop quickly if you need to. How fast you got to that speed has nothing to do with it.

Very true. Never thought of that
  8. #8
    so...without replacing brakes...again...???
  9. #9
try rebleeding them or putting a bigger master cylinder on them, have they beded in?
  10. #10
yea gona rebleed them at the weekend, i'll try the cylinder, i've done about 400 miles so, rekon they need more...?
  11. #11
You can improve pedal feel by replacing the rubber hoses with braided ones, upgrade the fluid to dot 5.1 and if you want less pedal travel before the brakes bite you can uprate the MC.

That's pretty much all you can do without upsizing!
  12. #12
i've upgraded the fluid already, apparently you cannot uprate the MC without redoing the brake lines, whats that involve...?

Just rebleeding the brakes...or do you mean upgrading the lines?

take the Green Stuff pads off and get some Mintex 1144's, i had green stuff on mine and they were absolute crap. they only work properly when they are hot which is why they should be only used on cars such as mr2's, 200sx's, skyline, etc....
  15. #15
upgrading the lines, hows that done...?
  16. #16
if you upgrade the brakes that much on a 1.1 you will stop so quick youre eyes will come out their sockets and the person behind you will be siting in the back of your car with you....

citroen payed millions for designers to design brakes adequate for the engine sizes especially 1.1's (face it they dont go that quick) just leave them how they are if you have got too much money dont spend it all on a 1.1 just get a bigger engined car or convert it.

end of that day if you wanta do it its your choice this is mearly my input good luck with it anyway

for better braking don't forget tyres.

Big brakes are useless if the grip between the tyre and the road becomes a significant factor in braking distance.

Agree'd for road use the standard brakes are fine, if your going on track vented and grooved discs with decent pads will be ok..

yeah but is this guy on a track?
  20. #20
i have some 266mm brakes for sale.

you dont read much do you. HE IS GETTING A ENGINE CONVERSION.
  22. #22
i think he should be some 266mm brakes from me then
  23. #23
The reason i'm doing it is because it isn't gonna be a 1.1 for much longer and i don't think the standard brakes are gonna quite cut it...

hinge a wooden stick out the door and pull hard, worked on my old wooden go cart as a kid!

big brakes - primary jobs is to disipate heat quickly. Upgrading to bigger disks and multi pot calipers will not decrease your braking distance on their own. What they will do is change the braking balance and feel through the pedals.

So to stop faster you need to do two things, reduce weight transfer to the front by fitting the best suspension that you can and also by fitting the best gripping tyres you can afford.

If your car can lock its brakes it shows that you can apply maximum force before the traction between the tyre and road is broken. A big brake kit will allow you to do this more times before brake fade will be an issue.

To increase that friction co-efficient between the road and tyre you need sticky tyres. If you are happy running cut-slicks during the summer then do it

Our 205 rallye trackcar ran £3k suspension on it, cut slicks with standard pads and disks and it could outbrake a friends Ibiza Cupra R with 4 pot Brembos.

I know many people find it hard to see the logic behind all this. if you disagree ask yourself this.
Why do my brakes lock quicker when the road is wet?
Its the same principle but in reverse

very good way of looking at things i suppose, seems to make sense too. I've got suspensio upgrade plans after i've sorted out the brakes. Guess that should also improve things too...
  27. #27
buy some 266mm brakes off me then striaght fit onto your car.
  28. #28
i would do, but i've just spent the best part of £300 on the brakes i just bought mate...
  29. #29
    what you bought?
  30. #30
VT* calipers, brembo disks & greenstuff pads...
  31. #31
you should of bought bigger brakes tbh.
  32. #32
yea, kinda thinking the same thing now...
