Camming a VTR

  1. #1
Right guys. I was thinking of buying myself a vts but then that all went wrong so I have decided to keep my vtr.

I have some money coming shortly and have got a few other things lined up, but was thinking about getting the cams done. Only problem is, I dont know much about this. If anyone could help me answer these questions please?!
    1. What exactly do I need to buy?
    2. How much is all parts and fitting likely to cost
    3. What sort of power increase am i likely to see?
Oh and is there anything else that will need to be done?

cam kit and fitting about 300 - 400

    then remap about 400 - 500

have you got everything you want done to the engine as cams and remap should be last on the list

with a big duration cam you will be looking around the 120 bhp mark max.

dare i say it.... a cammed 16v will reach 150 bhp + with ease...

well i was thinking about a manifold, but will i have to have a decat pipe as my cat is at the front? Im up for a manifold, but not too keen on decat as its hassle before an mot. Although if its pushing out more ponies, then maybe

So cams should be last then?

re map should be last, but cams deffinately towards the end of you mods list.
  6. #6
ok, im a little unclear, do i have to have it remapped for the cams to be fitted?
  7. #7
well its best to do it last as you will get the most out of cams and everything else with a remap mate

it will run ok dont get me wrong but its mostly a last engine mod

ok thanks mate, sorry to sound a little stupid! Engine stuff has never been my strong point on these! Give me a 998 A series any day!

So, if i go for a manifold, then cams, then remap. Thats the way to do it yea?

General order of mods to engine:
    Exhuast
    Induction
    Cams
    Re map

Exhuast and induction need to be sorted before the cams and remap otherwise if you are running standard induction of exhuast it will restrict the engine not allowing you to get the best out of the cam

yes. once you remap you cant change something again without remapping it again or being tweeked.

def change fanny, the standards are crap on saxo. mot time slip him a fiver. job done

ok, so would you advise on something like a bmc? And what sort of exhaust? At the mo i just have a peco, but thats just there for sound!

I have a Green enclosed filter, GMC 4-1 and a Magnex cat-back system! I'm really pleased with all these mods! Going for cam and re-map soon to mate! I'm going for the Piper 285 cam!

    you will need

Enclosed induction - Green, BMC or Raceland and green filter deal
Exhaust - Full stainless steel system- Magnex, piper, omp scorpion are all the main ones
Manifold - Raceland, GMC or supersprint
Cam Kit - piper seems to be the favourite on VTRs
then after all that get it remapped

BMC & Green both of which are a "enclosed" system, where as other's are open and will be pulling in warm/hot air from the engine bay.

You pretty much on the way on to doing what I am in the process of having done currently, my breath'n mods are done (manifold back & induction), I've chosen to go for a milder cam & dastek (secondhand), keep an eye on my progress thread for the outcome of my cam fitting & dastek.
