i had exactly the same problem, ity either the coil pack or, in my case the petrol pump, and i have a mk1 westcoast too. but at the same time i had a new coil pack off of an '04 plate saxo, map sensor, crank sensor and petrol pump, in total coming to £158.00 excluding labour.
hope it helps,
lee

They never made 04 plate saxo's.
Sounds like a coil pack or temp sensor issue to me.

when was the last time you cahnged your plugs?
maybe try new plugs, then try the coil pack.
you can get the coil packs from eurocarparts alot cheaper than off citroen
