right people i have a problem with my 106 gti, as soon as i put it in 2nd it just pops straight back out of gear, anyone got any ideas why this is

i think i'll need a new box, i know a vts one fits but does a vtr?

also which other box will fit

    many thanks

any tu engine gearbox will fit. it could be syncros have fucked. they have like shoes and springs in them which can snap and deteriate over time which could be why it is kicking out of gear. is it ok in 1st though. as 1st and 2nd share syncros??

hi yes its fine in 1st

    what do u mean TU?
  4. #4
btw any advantages disadvantages of puttin a 1.4 box in?

mzmz i have the same problem heheh !! had it for a while now ive brought a new gearbox but my mate said it could be something else not synchros !!!

If you put a 1.4 box in, it HAS to be the 1.4 XSI box IIRC! It's actually got a different final drive to the GTI box, so you lose a little top speed and will gain accelleration! So it's a great choice!

its the engine code like the gti/vts engine is a TU5J4 engine and the 1.6 rallye is the TU5J2 engine. basically majority of the 106/ saxo box's will fit.

any box will fit from the TU range mate.
im sure the 106 ralleye box is one of the better ones for acceleration. but they are uber hard to find lol
when you find a new box bud, i would fit a new realease bearing along with a new clutch (just to be on the safe side). you will need 2 new drive shaft oil seals and box fluid to, its not to hard to do yourself , just take a little bit of time and patience

you could always have your box reconned, but that would cost quite a few quid, but you never know what condition a second hand box is like until its on the car.
    swings and roundabouts

the 1.3 rallye box is the one of best for acceleration. with the 1.6 rallye one a very close second.

you've got to take into account more gear changes aswell.
  11. #11
Yup, but more chance of catching your power band when coming out of a corner in a certain gear!
  12. #12
right so the rallye one is the one, but if i cant find one of them

    will a VTR one do?
  13. #13
yeah vtr one will do but it wont accelerate so much as the VTS one

a 1.1 box is very good for acceleration, you will notice a difference
  14. #14
right so the easy ones to get are the vts/gti or a 1.1 box

which one should i be going for?
  15. #15
1.1 boxes are very common and cheaper....

    looking around £90 for a 1.1

    and around £130-160 for a vts/gti box

just to add, 1.1 will give you better acceleration but will lose top end a bit

    http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/SAXO-1100-GEAR...QQcmdZViewItem

    so that should be fine?
  18. #18
yep that would be perfect as long as your satisfied with it, i have a spare 1.1 box which looks much better than the ebay one lol

can post it out to you if ya interested

i have a 1.1 box in my VTS and tbh i dont notice a slight bit of difference
paid 49 quid for mine and it'd only done 10k
