Vortex Exhaust????

  1. #1
Today took my car to 1 Stop Performance and after they fitted my manifold got talking to the owner. They can build exhausts and he showed me part of an exhaust, think it may have been the silencer or maybe the back box without the tailpipe. But anyway inside the baffles I think they are were in sort of a screw shape to send the exhaust gases into a vortex. They had dyno'ed a car with the standard exhaust and then this vortex exhaust thing and showed a gain of between 8-12BHP. And they do have the dyno results to prove it.

I just wondered if anyone had heard of anything like this? Im thinking about having one built.

I have seen them before and read about them, i have never seen one in action though or know of anyone thats got one...

yh my mate had one on his mini, it was a a vortex muffler which replaced the cars existing main muffler and he said he got about a extra quite abit more torque and better accelerration. the vortex reduces exhaust manifold pressure by vacuuming exhaust gases out of the manifold rather than relying solely on the build up of back pressure to push the gases out resulting in significant improved engine performance.

    hope this helps. rep needed

Cheeky bugger, lol. I will think about it.

Here is a pic of what I mean, its not the best but you can see it.

what sort of price you looking at. also are these figues hes showing you been done on a saxo or a suburau so the gains look bigger

Nah they were done on an alfa, 150bhp standard so 12.5% power increase. Obviously I would be surprised if a VTR gained this much as a VTR doesnt have 150 bhp but even if a VTR gained 8% extra it would still be another 7bhp.

About £240 for full stainless system manifold back, decat and fitting.I cant remember exactly the price but i know it was less than £299 cos that was the origional price but he offered a discount cos I got my manifold fitted today and because Im on here.

I might phone up tommorrow and check.

Hmmmmm, not quite sure about that, I have seen exhausts with fans inside them which spin and again are sospsed to work on the same basis of a turbo, the quicker you make the fan spin the more it will maket you go.

But I cant help think it would more impeed performance than imporve it.

Only real way to know is if your happy to give it a go why not have one fitted and see what you think.

I think I'll stick to a normal exhaust for the time being.
    Interresting theroy tho

The fan idea just sounds a bit odd. Im thinking about giving it ago, but I cant decide whether to try this or get an ashley system, as I know the gains are good.

The ashley systme will be alot cheaper and probally louder too, but will need proffesional fitting as the quality of there fit isnt the best it has to be said.

I had one on a XR2i years ago and that took at least 3 seprate atempts to get it sitting right, loved one it was ok tho.

check out www.rallydesign.co.uk for good prices, Im not sure but I think they are the cheapest place you can get Ashely systems from

Good service too, used them anumber of times and I would always try there for items first before anywhere else.

Wonder why all manufacturers dont use this design if it works? Much like these race buttons/resistors etc...

Did your man with the rolling road do back to back comparisons with the vortex system and any other after market exhaust to show that the vortex would gain more than any other aftermarket exhaust?
  11. #11
    I bet he didnt
  12. #12
He did do a back to back rolling road test actually, three times. But I cant remember if the power gain was over the standard exhaust or the standard one.
  13. #13
So really we are no further forward that its any better than any other aftermarket exhaust

    just a money making shceme
