Which VTR?

  1. #1
Hi all, still looking for a VTR..

Im wondering, is there much difference in performance between the facelift and prefacelift? MPG a lot different? Overall which is better?

I'm working to a smallish budget (2k) so havent got loads to spend, in two minds whether to get an older (R,S,T) one and have some cash to personalise it to my taste, or get a new one with the full ammount?

    Which would you reccomend?

Thanks a lot for any help!!

personally i'd buy the 90bhp VTR which you can buy in both Mk1 and Mk2 styles. I say this as its more convienient to modify, for example if you want to add a manifold to the 98bhp VTR then you would be decatting it too, so you would either have to put the original mani back on for MOT or put a Mk1 exhaust system on, also you would have to relocate the oil filter and buy a lamba sensor sleeve on the 98bhp engine, but not on the 90bhp version.
if you later decide to cam it and are wanting a remap, the 98bhp version of the engine is a 3 plug ECU which is a ball ache to map, whereas the 90bhp version is single plug and a doddle to do!

just a couple of reasons why i'd buy the 90bhp version, like i said you can buy it in the MK1 and Mk2 styles, i have the Mk2 90bhp Saxo VTR!

    hope this helps

Thanks for that mate, when did the 98bhp come out, what years are they? (Reg)
I thought at first it was just the MK2s that had 98bhp. I'm wrong obviously lol. So you'd reccomend MK2 90bhp?

Isnt the MPG in the 90bhp poor?

Oh right, read on parkers and a few others, most tell different things. Parkers says '99 onwards??

So the 98bhp is out of the window anyway!

no not that bad at all mate tbh on the motorway i get 38MPG with a 4-2-1 manifold, full exhaust system and an enclosed induction kit!

phase 2 saxos were late 99.

but phase two vtrs didnt all come with the 98 engine, they started with the usual 90bhp silvertop.

Glad I asked this now, I'd have gone for a mk2 and thought it was the 98bhp!

Might have to go for the mk1 now, not too sure on which looks I preffer though, with a small budget too..

Top end of my budget really, seen a couple but they're £1800+
  12. #12
would go for a mk1 mate, something around a 1998,should get 1 for 1000-1200 and then you have cash for whatever else you want, e.g lowering and alloys, or a sound system or a few engine mods, like manifold, full exhaust system and a enclosed air filter,

although if you have a really good look around you can sometimes find the 2000 vtr, mk2 with 90bhp for around the 1500 mark, so its down to what front end you want mate.

i was just reitterating what you had said

also if you go for mk1, then bear in mind its older, and there is more likely to be more wear on the parts than a newer model

unless of course it has been well looked after and faulty parts replaced!
  16. #16
go for a phase1 silver top and save yourself the money
  17. #17
Thanks everyone. Think I'm going for the MK1 unless theres a dirt cheap MK2 (Unlikely)

i prefer the look of the mark one to be honest (not bias at all). Anyway gonna hijack the thread slighty cause i as far i was aware the vtr came with three engines, not just two. A black top first of all the then two different types of silver top. What is the difference between them all?
  19. #19
Mk2s look a hell of alot better imo

But yeah as said if you want to decat the 98bhp you have to change the whole manifold which means swapping this back come mot time.

    black top = 90bhp
    <2001 silvertop = 90bhp
    2001> silvertop = 98bhp
  21. #21
When did they stop doing black top, people reccomend silvertop?
  22. #22
blacktop were the very first engine to be made! about 10 years old now easy!
  23. #23
Oh right, bit too old that I think..

Sorry to ask so many questions

because things progress over the years! they do it with all cars. not sure what the main reason for the changes were though!

If you have a search its been asked before

the black top has a dizzy the silvertop is on coil and thats about it, but it does make alot of difference when you watch the engine side by side, my mates 140,000k silvertop used to pull away from my 50k black top

    also has differnet tappets.

the blacktop engine was used to good success in the s2 rallye and produced better power than a vtr due to a revised cam and ecu
