cat back system

ive just had a piper backbox fitted to my furio and it sounds nice but its not as loud as id liked. ive got it booked in a powerflow on tuesday to have a stainless steel pipe fitted from the cat to the backbox, will this make it sound louder and will it sound nicer ticking over? also will i get a few pops n rumbles when engine braking?

should have just got a supersprint/sebring center pipe, would be better quality,.
  3. #3
agree i like the supersprint ones best tbh

are magnex any good though because ive heard a mix of views on their centre sections?
    sorry for slight thread hijack

im just going get it done at powerflow, its not going to cost shed loads and at least it will be a perfect fit with it being custom made, ive heard good and bad things about them but they did a good job of my mates! anyway the question is will it be noticeably louder?
  5. #5
yes, as your taking out any centre boxes! so it will be alot louder, and yes it will also pop when you down gear!
  6. #6
Yeah strait through and de-cat will be loud with lots of pops.

Removing the centre box should slightly improve gas flow making the car slightly better higher up the rev range. Decatting would also improve performance and increase the exhaust note again.

There is a debait whether single box (just back box) or twin box (centre and back box) systems are better than the other.

A single box system should give more gains higher up the rev range where as a twin box system should see better gains in the lower to mid range because of better back pressure generated by a twin box system.

imo you only want a single box system on a boosted engine, or a huge spec NA one, even then on the NA id still probably prefer to see a front silencer.

I'd prefer drivability over peak power when it comes to an exhaust. Saying that though the 1.4 8v drive better in the lower reves (imo). (it was like that with my quiksilver anyways).

not bothered about it rusting ive only got a mild steel backbox anyway so thats going to rust, ive got a pit in my garage anyway so i can go under the car and clean the system up on a regular basis, that will prevent the risk of rusting a bit. il only have it on the car for a couple of years anyway! i just want it to sound better and louder and give a nice rumble when engine braking, as long as i achieve that il be happy!

Like I think you mentioned awhile back twin box systems are also helpfull on the track for puttin power down out of the courners etc.

But each to their own, Im sporting a single box and Im happy with it so,
Whatever works for different people I guess, I think alot of people still go for the single box setup for exhaust noise and note styles really

will this be a single box then? straight through pipe to the backbox which has a single exit, will it be loud?
  14. #14
The back box will greatly control the finial exhaust note more so with the single box system.

I had a Janspeed mild steel twin box system converted to a single box (I had the centre box removed), admitadly the tick over note did increase slightly not much tho but the biggest change was on hard accelration, very nice.

Sometimes a single box system or even a twin box system depending on type can be quite boomy on a long run.

As long as the tailpipe/back box isnt to silly big you should be ok and you'd have to have a pretty loud exhaust to fail a MoT.

What tailpipe you looking at, at the moment?

A piper with a straight throught centre section will be loud but I shouldnt imagin to loud. As long as you keep the rev's down in town after a certain time and you should get any complants

single box systems tend to resonate more though due to the lack of center silencer, not because of the backbox. i had a straight through then a std rear box, still resonated to fuck and was louder than std.

already got the backbox on VTS_16V_Boy, had it fitted the other week, its a mild steel 3.5" inward rolled piper backbox! getting it done tomorrow so il just have to wait and see! im sure it will sound nice, basically it will be a custom stainless steel straight through pipe from cat to the piper backbox, not a bad setup realy is it, will an induction kit make it sound better too, not going to decat or get a new manifold!

Depending on how loud the exhaust is, any induction noise might be lost in the exhaust note - That doesnt mean you shouldnt do it.

You have a few choices here really.

    Normally the rule is

    Open Filter - Noise
    Enclosed Filter - Performance

www.kam-racing.com can sell you a scoop filter which will be better on performance than an open cone filter but not as loud as a cone filter.
You could find a non-branded BMC enclosed filter like a few members have but again the improvement in performance is good but the noise is lost alittle.

If you are just interested in a nice looking engine bay and abit more noise and any gains in performance are just a bonus a simple open cone filter will be fine as long as you feed it enough cold air with some felixable piping.

If you want that little more performance and alittle bit more noise have a word with Kam-racing and see what they can sort you out

    Hope that helps

got the exhaust done today, done a top job sound loads better too. doesnt realy pop but sounds nice, before you say decat it im not goin to lol
  19. #19
You might find that later on as the exhaust settles in and the note changes slightly that you might get the odd pop of fart every nown and again as mine does but only sometimes and Ive got my cat still

haha did it tonight at the petrol station, sounded mint, seems to do it just in first like edging forward and then letting it engine brake! is getting louder by the day lol!
