My inner gaiter has split so am thinking of replacing the whole drive shaft rather than just the boot joint becos a dont no how long its been split and alot of grease is now splaterd about my engin bay. what would use advise doing

#2new boot kit is only £10 or something, shouldnt take you too long to fit yourself or a garage should beable to do it reasonbly cheaply.
If you can change it yourself mate, id advise on trying the kit first.
I bought mine with 2 inner torn boots and it took me about 2000 miles before i noticed they were torn, no telling how long they had been before i got the car aswell. Just repalced the boots though and has been well for the past 9 months

#3i can get a drive shaft for a tenner from the scrap yard of a 02 plate. What should i look for,jst the teeth being ok and gaitors fine. Also wats the diff with abs and non abs. are they both the same length. Its the drivers side btw

#4id get the boots fixed and the other shaft for a tenner.
its easyer to fix the boots than change the shaft.
at least then you have a spare aswell. -

#6If you change the shaft, remember it won't be just that, you'll need to catch the gearbox oil and replace / re-use...
Though its much easier to do the boots with the shaft off...
Fitted 2 new(ish) Driveshafts to mine today, fairly easy, though i had to have the box off too for the flywheel and thrust bearing, which complicated things! -
#7I would change the shaft. If its been running without grease for a while then it's going to be fudged anyhow - even if it takes a while to show that.
Anyhow at the end of the day its not expensive and a fairly easy DIY job to replace the whole lot -
#8mines is the drivers side so the gear oil wont cum out when i take the shaft off if the cars jst jacked at one side. Or at least it didnt when we dun my mates 106

#10bare in mind there are more than 1 type of shaft, and if you get the wrong one you can break your wheel bearing within miles, on the end where it joins the hub they are tapered or flat, if you put the wrong one in its bye bye bearings, I would just replace the boot, the one closest to the gearbox end is normally okas it doenst move as much as the wheel side (in terms of direction other than round)
