The importance of the breather pipe??

    Rite.. bout 3 months ago i fitted a K&N myself. Took out the old crap.. and put a breather filter on the breather pipe.. No problems at all up until now. Both my filters were stinking so thought i'd give them a wash. Fitted the K&N no problem.. then i thought, why cnt i just put the breather filter straight onto the oil tank? So i did.. threw the breather pipe away. Lwked alot better.

    BUT

    Little did i know that my car wud die within the nxt 30 mins. Outta nowhere.. white smoke blasted outta the back end ov the exhaust (shit myself) then opened the bonnet 2 find that i'd blown the manifold aswell.

    The end result were needing a new engine.

    Could all this be down 2 the fact i threw the breather pipe away??

    White smoke usually suggests headgasket..

    was there any oil leaking or anything?

    get the maifold changed and check for leaks round the gaskets

    Yes the headgasket went.. no oil leaks.

    But took it 2 garage nd they said i needed new engine. wos a crack in the cylinder head or something.. nd my pistons were gone??

    But is all this cos of the breather pipe i removed 30 mins earlier?

    very much doubt it mate

    but i tell you what is good news, you could always get a VTS engine in if its knackered

    Just makes me wonder like... lol.. Well i did consider it.. but got 1400 coming now.. will buy a VTS in the future probably

    Hehe. OK, here's a little schooling for you then. Firstly, I'm not sure what you mean by putting the breather straight into the oil tank...? And secondly, if this is similar to the crank case breather pipe found on the 16 valve lumps, then it actually flows both ways! When you have high pressure in the exhaust manifold, for example when idling, air actually comes from outside into the breather. When you have low pressure in the exhaust manifold, this is when oil vapour comes out from breather pipe. So if you put this pipe somewhere it couldn't breath air... Who knows what could have happnened.

    Well thas the best i could describe it sorry lol.. maybe it's different to your car? What i mean by putting it straight onto the breather pipe, is to put the breather filter onto the socket where the pipe itself orignally was.

    If that's all you did, then that sounds fine... I'm more confused now I think, as that sounds different to what you said before. Start again? Hehe

    The pipe shown is what i removed.. i was told that it had nuthin to do with my headgasket going.. but lwking at the picture.. surely the pipe had something to do with it? Still confused how this happened
