Compressing Standard Springs!!

  1. #1
does any one no if u can compress standard springs?? if so where would i go to get it done?

dont bother saying stuff like why not buy sfter market ones ect just want the question answered pretty please!!

    thanks
  2. #2
do you mean lowering the standard spring? or to compress it to take it off?
  3. #3
    no dont
  4. #4
making the standard spring like compress them to 40mm to lower ma car!!
  5. #5
is it possible and where would i go about to get it done?
  6. #6
not that i no off you cant do it they do kits like these ones
    http://www.graystonengineering.com/suspensionpage.htm
and they are like the only thing you can get to compress a std spring from what i know off?
and i know you said dont say it but you rae best of with another uprated spring
    hope this helps?
  7. #7
it probably can be done, should you do it?? NO it would be forcing the spring to run how its not meant to, and will be as good as cutting them
  8. #8
You would have to remove the springs. Clamp them in a vice to desired height. Heat them up with a blowtorch till while hot. Leave to cool. Compare coil heights. Refit.

orite i got ya like a lil clamp that u clamp on the spring!

are they safe to u no???

wots the worst that can happen if they some how fall offf????

uve been a big help.. hope u can help me more!!

the springs could be heated and then compressed but id say due to the safety issues with doing it not many places would be willing to do it for you.. it would be hard to get an even height on all the springs and the heating and cooling/compressing would im sure weaken them to the point of them prob splitting or coils breaking off.... im sure you could heat them and then tighten a set of springs clamps on them to compress them and then let them cool but id seriously advise against it.... as even doing this they could pop out of the spring clamps under load which is like a bomb going off.... save the hassle and risk matey and get some proper lowering springs..
  11. #11
to be honest no i would not imagine the life of the to be very long before it rotted through they have been about a long time but the safer way would be change the spring
if they are clamped they are not working how they have been designed ?
  12. #12
if it came off while driving it would prob happen under pressure like on a corner/bend or something this would give you all sorts of handling problems through that bend, would not like to say what could happen then
  13. #13
for the hassle of doing it you may aswell buy some. plus the fact its a cowboy job

thats it for the time it would take to get under there and clamp them on etc its easier to drop the lot out and put the new spring on and safer!!

Compressing them beyond their elastic limit will result in plastic deformation and induce work hardening - which will weaken the material and leave it brittle. Thankfully a complete compression of the spring to its smallest displacement is unlikely to plastically deform it.

You could heat them, but then the heat treatment itself will either harden the spring - again leaving it brittle or soften it leaving it completely unusable.

These are all bad things to be considering.

I'm sure I've got a set of Ventura springs knocking around in the storeroom. Off the top of my head they'll lower the car approx 40mm and I'll sell them to you for a low rate of £60 delivered. messing around with heating / chopping springs is going to be a disaster

Are ventura springs good kam?? They came with my bilsteins but i have never heard of them?
  19. #19
or if you are on a tight budget £50 will get you some gmax springs. Its not worth even trying what you want ur querying. Also, as said you wont have the car sitting as right as you would if you just put some cheap and cheerful springs on.

no thank for the help every1 was jsut an idea me and few friend had but seems like to much effort and jsut thought sod it wasnt about the money just finking of defferent ideas!! cherrrrrz!!!!
  21. #21
dont ever think of different ideas when it comes to suspension and safety, companies spend millions developing parts that work and are strong, playing about can be potentially dangerous

Good enough for Bilstein to ship them with their Sprintline kit. The combination works really well.

mason buy sum lowering springs ill fit em for ya
  27. #27
My brother did this to an old car to slam the bitch, but I'm pretty sure I remember him telling me that if springs have been heat up or cut then it's an mot failure (he used to be an mot tester). He only used them for a short while and then bought proper lowering springs.
  28. #28
if u can see they been heated or mishaped mot failure aswell mate front lowering springs not that much
  29. #29
Just get some lowering springs ffs!! cost fuk all! lol
