Exhaust Dilemma

  1. #1
At the moment I've got a twin exit backbox (made by Rage)

    Pic:

Its started to make a rattle/vibrating noise, so the first thing I thought was one of the rubber hangers must be at fault.
I looked under the car and couldn't see that they were perished. I tapped on the tailpipe and it made a horrible noise like there was some loose metal inside. The noise seemed to come from the tailpipe and not inside the box itself.

I thought it could be the baffles inside?
I'm wondering if I'll have to replace it, if this is the case I have a bit of a problem. The bumper is obviously cut out for a twin pipe, therefore I can't really fit a single exit. So I need another twin, but.... I can't find any companies that make them (i.e magnex, scorpion etc)
Does anybody know of a manufacturer that does twins, or any other suggestions?? (probs custom?)

It sounds like the baffles could be gone mate! Same thing has happened to my
    centre box/centre section!

I know Piper offer different style of tailpipes.

Its an idea but you could maybe get a 106 GTi/rallye Magnex backbox like mine
and get it custom fitted to match your car? The fittings like?

Its an idea but may work out expensive?

Best to figure out if its the baffles in the centrebox or backbox that have gone first.

piper make a twin backbox for the Saxo in 2 styles.

I just happen to be browsing through their catalogue as we have them on our supplier list as of today

I think what I'll do is go to local exhaust place and ask them what they think. They should be able to tell me if it is the back box at fault or if something else is catching. Then I'll know better, hopefully I'll get time to do that on wednesday. Then I'll be able to make a decision!

Cool, didn't realise piper made a twin TBH, I checked on some sites but they only listed about 6 different styles all of which were single exits. I'll bare that in mind once I've been and investigated, Cheers!

Pity the bumper has been cut or I'd be on the phone for a ABP Magnex!

Have you got the standard centre section, because when I had the standard centre section and changed parts of the exhaust the centre section moved slightly on the hanger just before the silencer I think. This hanger has a little metal ball on it that was bangin on the bottom of the car and it sounded horrible. Just a suggestion.

Now you say that mate the car went for its MOT a few weeks ago and it had a new standard centre section put on then, I'll check tomorrow!

With a trim'd bumper its slight harder to chose a tailpipe to fill the space but its not the end of the world mate

www.demon-tweeks.co.uk will be able to sell you a Universal fitting Magnex 6x4 Oval, which is a very nice looking bit of kit and you know your buy quality when you buy Magnex, its not cheap I think £120 or there abouts but it will look spot on.

Your other options are other universal oval's or twin pipes.

Check on www.speedbox.co.uk as they do good priced Pipers, check to see what other tailpipe fitments they list you might be in luck

    Hope that helps

Only thing Karl is he's got a massive hole so he needs something abit beefier to fill it.

Thats why Fat birds like a bloke hung like a horse lol

    Source a new bumper
no point picking a gash exhaust because of your bumper cut out?

Cheers mate, the magnex sounds good and I have considered an oval but still unsure if it would fill the hole. Pity I can't get a bumper I've cheacked ebay but no luck

Best thing to do if unsure is get a peace of card, draw a line 6' across the a line though the middle 4' hight so you make a cross then just draw from point to point making a 6x4 Oval then go outside to the car and see how it measures up

Any desent exhaust fabricator or mechanic should be able get a universal Magnex box to sit correctly.

I normally tell people to avoide Magnex cos they look crap but thats just the Saxo 3.5' Back box as shown below, I quite like the 6x4

    *Update*

I've been to the local exhaust place today and as I expected the backbox is busted. It isn't the baffles though,
the plate on the inside of the tailpipe (not the box itself) has come loose and vibrates making it sound poo.

the backbox is also welded to the centre section suggesting that the current one is a universal? I've found a direct fit twin rage exhaust on fleebay click
However the rage logo on the tailpipes is putting me off, lol!
So I'm thinking of ringing a custom exhaust place about 20mins away, called JP stainless. Click
Apparently their really good, so I'll give him a buzz and see how much a backbox would be, or Cat-back. That way it will fit the hole nicely!
the hole is 8inches across so a 6 by 4 oval might not be big enough.

The logos althought not the best brand could be a nice touch as I think its Sebring that have their logo's on thier tailpipes.

Forget about the hole in your bumper as you could always have a chrome or metal trim fitted like on the MG's to reduce the size of the hole, also you could always sourch a bumper at a later date

I rang the zorst place up today and they have quoted me 150 plus VAT for a backbox, and 280 plus VAT for a Cat back system.
    Does this sound about right??
