Oil Breather??

    what are the benefits of having a breather filter on the end of a long hose?

    seen this on mattwestys engine and was wondering why its was done like that?

    rig it up to a catch tank imo!

    my breather stinks and gets clogged often so im doing the above soon!

    Depends what hose you are talking about mate...

    If you are refering to the crank case breather pipe, then do a search for 'catch tank' and all will be revealed!

    The crank case breather pipe is on the right side of the head, towards the back.

    thats the rocker cover not the crank case!

    crank case is at the bottom of the engine and as the name implies houses the crank

    puch the cat if you want!

    So you're saying that crank case breather is the wrong terminology? It's actually called the cam cover breather?

    to answer the original Q. theres isnt a benefit, just looks. if anything its probally worst because the shit that goes thru it has further to travel to escape..

    yep! rocker cover technically as it covers the CAM rockers!

    underneath lies the "CAM case" or "engine head"

    then you have the "engine block" which includes the "crank case"

    I didn't think my car had any rockers, hence the term cam cover...

    Anyway, I've always wondered as to why it was called the crank case breather pipe... So is this breather pipe that we are dealing with here, responisble for riding of the 'blow by' created during the combustion process?

    breather pipe takes of hot oil vapours and puts them back into the combustion process

    oil breather just lets them escape!

    the oil heating up produces vapours

    it doesnt actually combust as it doesnt enter the pistons at all!

    Yep, but you get the blow by coming upward too, and it pretty fierce. Have you ever taken the oil filler cap off while the engine was running? Serious flow of air. I was wondering if the breather pipe was dealing with this blow by...

    blow by?

    its probably caused by the oil pump sending the oil up from the sump

    breather pipe just stops the gases building up in an enclosed space

    it carries them away into either the TB or out of the rocker cover i you have a oil breather
