Dismantling gear box to fit Quaife

  1. #1
Does the whole box need stripping down or is the diff seperate. Since I blew my diff it may be easier to fit this (unless the whole box needs dismatling)

    Cheers
  2. #2
whole box appart, the diif is at the far end of the box, which you cant get to without removing the gearset
  3. #3
    Bugger!

Ah well just a good condition 2nd hand box it is for me then.

    Anyone know of one??
  4. #4
why not just wang on a cheap shitty 2nd hand 1.1 box for a month of so and then get yours rebuilt with a quaife?
  5. #5
How hard is a DIY gearbox rebuild?
  6. #6
    Blew a diff!!

How did you manage that mate! lol

its a bastard to do, and i wouldnt recomend it if youve never had a box in bits.

Not sure just coming out of a junction and then lost all drive. The drive shaft's CV and Clutch all seem fine so the mechanic thinks its the diff.

Dont want a 1.1 box as there not very strong also i'd need new drive shafts. Also dont really have the £800+ for a rebuid and quaife ATM.

Damn guess that means it could be faily costly to have it rebuilt then?

There any guides around explaining how to do it, i'd probably be up for giving it a bash
  10. #10
It costs arround £300 for a rebuild with new syncro's etc. That doesn't include the cost of any new cogs if there fooked.

not that expensive for a rebuild, just i personally wouldnt do it just to give it a bash, ive got an s1 rallye box here i need to take appart and rebuild, atm its still sat in my garage like it has done for the last 5 months lol

didnt think you needed new shafts to run a 1.1 box as its only the hub end that effects the different drive shafts. not 100% on that though but alot of people run 1.1 boxes and dont change shafts.

i personally dont like 1.1 boxes (they are not as good as vts boxes no matter what the fucktards say) but theyre cheap whilst getting a diff fitted

Well a Quaife would probably be about my last mod for the saxo and im still quite a bit away from that point atm. I try to do as much as i can myself though cus i cant stand not knowing how things work! Maybe when the time comes i'll have a bit more experience and have a go.

Failiing that ill just put all the bits in a box and take it to a garage and say "Fix it, fix it!"

i just wouldnt want to make a mistake on a gearbox personally, as if you fubar it it will go wrong in a nice way, people on here like marting from tweeqed are very good with boxes imo.

yea the box ends up in bit's then you have got to get the old diff pressed off, which is a bitch of a job, then the new diff pressed on, then rebuild the box back up, as the box it still in bits you should replace all the bearings then you know you have got a strong box, LSD makes a huge difference when your on track, the way the car pulls out of corners is amazing, good luck....

I had to fit a new clutch cable to my aprilia rs 125 when i had it..Had to take the gearbox casing off, somehow the cogs/synchros or whatever fell out as i took the casing off..

Never looked inside a box before this point..anyways popped it all back together with the new clutch cable and it was fine..maybe slightly different to a car but i managed to put it all back together etc..

seems ok.. if youve got a mate who can help you can do it easy, 3/4 starter motor bolts, 3/4 big box bolts, shafts removing etc...

if you have some trolley jacks and axel stands you can do it in a couple of hours.

if your getting a box change do the clutch now aswell.

heres a few pics of my m8 one dunc of the rallye reg...

  23. #23
getting the bolts off can be a bastard, i know mankee killed his T50 on my quiafe d up box, and had a couple of uber gay bolts and thats using an airgun, theyre fucking tight.
  24. #24
That is a bit more complicated than the Aprilia..LOL
  25. #25

i agree alot, even if at times they can be analy retentive and very narrow minded.

sandys hillclimb engine was an interesting read

Cheers guys this is alot of help!
  32. #32
fitting a box is easy, you should be able to do it in a few hours as said above. but if you hevnt built a few boxes before i would strongly recomend leaving it to a garage
  33. #33
yh m8 not a bad price i charged ma m8 120 for changing his clutch which is the same really apart from u would nout need 2 remove the clutch.
  34. #34
you charged a mate 120 quid for changing a clutch? You robbing cunt LOL

Rebuilding a box isnt hard if you have a bit of common sense, can remember where everything went and can be meticulous enough.

If you dont trust yourself, I can be hired for quaife installation.
