gearbox

    got a 2001 mk2 1.1.
when i try to put car into reverse, i sometimes get a painful grinding noise and stick doesnt go completely into place. this happens about 40% of the time and im conscious that i have the clutch right down and gearstick in correct position but it still happens.
what could it be? any solutions? its a 2001 gearbox with only 22000 miles done. thanks

if you are still moving slightly the cogs will crunch.

try pumping the clutch 2 times before depressing it fully and then see how easily it goes in.

When I had a tired box in an AX a while ago, I used to put it into 2nd directly before selecting reverse (while stationary obv!) and it helped.

Its the same gearbox as an AX, so you could try it.

As per Iceys post (not seen you in a while sunshine), go for 1st or 2nd then reverse.

One of my old cars used to do this if you go into reverse to slowly.
Don't force it, if it doesn't go right in first time, take it out and try again - Wouldn't want to damage anything further!

Even my Driving instructors 06 plate 206 used to do it, and that was when i was learning coming on a year ago!
