GTi/VTS vs VW Golf 1.8T

  1. #1
A friend of a friend reckons his VW Golf 1.8T will ruin my lil 106 GTi...

150bhp housed in something alot heavier than my tin can, has not been modded under the bonnet nor is it the anniversary edition with 180bhp. Although it does have a dump valve as he insists on dumping it every 20 secs. And a top speed of 130mph I really don't think so???

    What do you think?

And no I don't condone racing on public roads etc driving like a cunt etc Mc Donalds car park or anything similar so don't have a go!!!

id think the gti would be quicker or very simalar
  3. #3
    1.8T is that the TDI?

Id like to think so, cant see 150bhp in something that heavy being quicker off the mark than mine...

    Nah petrol...

    The 1.8T is a lot slower to 60/100 unless it's a 180BHP model

Standard kit/wheels its definitely not the 180 Anniversary model

I reckon you'd out do him in the gti...
Especially with that added 10% bhp of the speeddent

Lol! SpeedDent TM is now fixed... Ahhh memories

    VW Golf 1.8T 0-60 = 8.5 seconds

So your GTi would beat it to 60mph

    Info from Parkers

    Golf 1.8T

    CC - 1781
    BHP- 150
    Top Speed - 134mph
    0-60- 8.2secs

    106 GTI

    CC - 1587
    BHP- 120
    Max Speed - 128mph
    0-60 - 8.4secs

    VTS for comparison

    CC - 1587
    BHP- 120
    Max speed - 127mph
    0-60 - 7.5secs

I always question Parkers accuracy, i cant believe that for the same engine and almost the same car that the 0-60 time is 0.9secs in favour of the Saxo

On a similar note they also have the wrong figures for VTR bhp aswel

GTi/VTS comparison figures are ridiculous, how the hell do they work that out?? Ive also done alot more than the stated top speed, speedo accurate or not. Naughty I know

Theres a 180bhp standard looking gti.

Thanks Matt for bringing up the whole GTi/VTS 0 to 60 saga.... lol!

The standard 1.8T Golf is wank and feels like a boat on wheels. The 2.0 non
turbo is even more shite but we arent on about that GTi.

Anniversary I haven't been in/driven but packs a lot more power!
  17. #17
Person you need to ask about this is gav as he went from a vts to one of these golfs so he would know whats quicker imo the golf would edge it
  18. #18
As mentioned it depends what you are racing to, quarter mile i'd say the golf. The top end pull would be alot more so would probabely win. The gti would be ahead at 60mph though.

A guy i work with has a 270bhp golf. Absolutely awesome. Wheelspins all the way through second in the dry!!!!

Its all acedemic now anyways!!! Went round some B roads last night with him and cleanly beat him to every roundabout.
  20. #20
Id favour the 106 GTi to about 75mph
  21. #21
    i have a vts and a 1.8 t
the vts is quicker to about 90-95
then the golf comes back and kills it lol

I class that as a win for the French Tuna Tin
  23. #23
Who in their right mind would race past 95 anyhoo! On a circuit it doesn't matter if there was a long strait as you'd have already gained a good lead in the corners IMO

Although the 1.8t can be chiped up quite well.

Is this the same engine as in the Audi TT 1.8T My mates getting one and says it'll be miles faster. I'm inclined to think no.. Specialy since mine has a few treats fitted
  24. #24
be a good race on a 1/4 mile me thinks
  25. #25
yep, probably mid 15s for the pair.
  26. #26
http://www.letstorquebhp.com/fwd.asp - Not 100% but gives an ok indication. IMO the 15.61s about right for a 135 saxo.

Volkswagen Golf 1.8T Gti 150 1236 123.31BHP per ton - estimated quater mile time 16.76 terminal speed 84.25

    Citroen Saxo VTS (*135bhp) 02 135 935 146.70 per ton - estimated quater mile 15.61 terminal speed 89.43
  27. #27
except the VTS doesnt have 135bhp.
  28. #28
Golf-t and the 106 gti would be a close call till 80 odd, the golf would defo do it past that, i know its heavy but you got to remember that the golf has 20v and a turbo. Pretty much the same with the vts apart from 0-100 odd the vts would do it.

SS Janspeed system/decat. Sportex 4-2-1 mani and Green Cotton is all Ive done really. I cleanly beat him to 100mph anyways, thats good enough for me
  31. #31
You wont be far of 135 with that I bet!

You be faster yeah and the fact the standard 1.8t looks tosh also makes yours better IMO
  32. #32
    Nice GTi btw Mardon...
  33. #33
    Cheers bud

Get it back tonight with new gear box. Not had it for nearly 2 weeks, sucks getting the bus!
  34. #34
Tell me bout it! Not long had mine back after some bint reversed into my door lol
  35. #35
I'll try and dig out the pics tonight. I had pretty much the same thing happen. Some bloke smacked into the door when it was open. Sounds like my fault but wasn't, its a complicated one to explain.

The annoying thing is I only changed the clutch last month so had the box out then..

    Happens to us all
  37. #37
look mate iv done a golf gti 1.8t silly on my vts and it had a full load me and 4passengers leaving him about a car gap so you could imagine. if i was alone how much gap i would have left the gti, and o yeah the gti just had a driver in it.
  38. #38
but the 1.8t is still a better engine over all!!

you may beat him standard, but it doesnt take much for that engine to be running alot more power...which isnt as easy in the 106 or saxos!! the only edge our 106/saxos have is their handling!!
