Changing Gear

   hello everbody..how are we!?
   
   i have a problem..dont know whats causing it!!
   Basically, im having problems getting my car (Saxo Furio 2000 reg) into gear!Its a bit stiff and jolty to put it inbetween gears, but only the first time. ie, if i try putting it into 1st, it will be stiff, but if i take it out and go straight back in its smooth(er)!! its the same whether the engine is running or not!!
   
   My biggest problem though is when im breaking and try to go into first or second and the bastid just wont go...i have to properly force it!
   
   its worrying me a bit to say the least coz im worried that one day (pretty soon) something is going to go snap and il be stranded somewhere!!!and with some of the places around near where i live im not too excited about getting stranded!!
   
   Iv got a 'short shift' fitted and was wondering if it could be that...although iv only noticed it recently (although i did only pass my test last wednesday so iv been driving it alot more)..or is it something more serious like a new gearbox?! the box doesnt sound too noisey (and believe me, iv heard some pretty knackered gearboxes) but i was hoping it wouldnt be that!!
   actually, im hoping its something simple like 'put a bit of grease on that little peice there' and off i go...no!?

   The saxo gearboxes can be a bit stiff, its not the best thing shoving it into first when your slowing down, so you will need to use force.
   Same as if you tryed putting it straight into reverse, it wouldnt let you

   its not only first gear though...its all of them, i just notice it mostly in the lower gears!!

   Hello matey.. ive always had the same problem with first gear and reverse.
   
   If i coming down from second and i want to get into first i go from second into neutral.. go round with the gearstick and place it into first.. its much easier.. its hard to understand so i drew it on paint for you

   haha...quality picture!thanks...but i actually did understand you without the diagrams!!
   
   My reverse is a proper pain...but i thought that was just normal!is it not?
   I dont really wanna have to 'go round' with the gearstick everytime though. can it be fixed or is this jsut the way it is!?

   check the gear linkage to see if any of it is worn

    Iv semi-solved the problem a bit (after sitting at numerous roundabouts and junctions not being able to put it in gear)...its as if something has moved out of line coz i have to get the gear stick in the exact right position for it to go in smoothely. which would explain why it goes in easier after its been in once..wouldnt it!?

    jack the car up mate and greese your gear linkages with some WD40. i do this every week to keep my shifts sweets. however the linages are not that expensive from Citroen anyway. there are three in total (i think) one of them is £8ish the other £13ish cant remember the other so might be worth while changing them

    i get car bits at cost plus 10% anyhoo (i love working in a car dealership..lol) so might just do that!!
    
    worst case scenario though, what could i be looking at!?

    knackered syncro's is the worst problem which means the box will have to go for a refurb.

    i had the same problem, sometimes it was fine then other days it jst wouldnt go into first or reverse, took it to a garage, checked the linkages fine. my clutch bit was abit high so got a new 1 and the problem is fixed. worth checking that too

    Maybe its ur clutch going......thats why its not leting you put it into gear proper thats the first thing i would of thought about.....well tbh i dunno might not be the clutch but sounds like it to me but im no expert

    Same problem in my other car, could be synchro but a standard fault with the Saxo/106 gearbox is rainwater ingress due to very moderate fording. This gets in through the rather inadequately protected breather on top of the box. A minute and undetectable amount of water ruins the gearchange.
    
    Change the oil, clean the magnets on the level and drain plugs, anneal or replace the copper washers, and fill with the correct oil. This is a semi-synth 75W/90 to API GL-5 duty specification, think this would help along with checking the synchro etc

    with my experience of standard saxo gearboxes there not good at all......its a common fault i guess........though ive had worse i done a gearbox in my old Fiesta Si within 2 weeks.....cant handle my driving style which aint too good......booting it everywhere most of the time.....got to calm down or my car will spend more time in the garage then on the road

    Or it could be the gearbox mounting studs to mounting plate. Mine had worked their way loose causing the clutch cable to become slack. The gear linkage was then pushing the Gearbox about. I had problems getting it into gear at the time too. I hope this helps.

    hi ya its em here im having probs wit my gears aswell somtimes they go in 1st and reverse then other times they wont. so took it 2 garage and its the clutch so getting new 1 fitted keep u posted cheers

    Mine used to have the same problem, would really struggle selecting a gear if i was exceeding the speed of that gear, mainly in first and second cant recall having the problem with any other gears. I replced all the gear box oil and WDed the gear links etc. Problem was still there. Ended up crashing the Saxo, because i thoguht it was a good idea to use a grinder to get the rust off all 4 of the break discs
    
    Saying that my last VTR had the same problem with gears.

    If this mainly happens when you a pushing it the you could double de-clutch while braking into the corner. Basicaly depress the clucth pedal move into neutral enage the clutch, depress it again and move into first and finaly re-engage the clucth. This helps to mach the gearbox, engine speed and wheel speed to make changing down easier. If this is happening at all times not just when your pushing it then double de-clutching should make changing down more comfortable in the short term but worth getting it fixed in the long term.

    i have this problem as well and seems to squeak now, anyone no how to solve this problem?? i.e. where to spray WD40 lol
