simple question, rear shocks...

if i fit some uprated bilstein rear shocks will it higher my car at the back ?

    Thanks.
  2. #2
    No.....
  3. #3
Is that 100% ? sorry to be a fool, but someone has told me it will go alot higher, and i cant be arsed to have the rear all adjusted again for like the 4th time ! :|

    It wont for sure..

Mine didnt when i fit my bilstein dampers on the back..

they shouldnt raise the car as they are just uprated dampers and are stiffer than standard - i dont have bilsteins but im using gmax and they are the same as my original shocks apart from being stiffer

now my understanding is that a damper... doesnt have a returning position unlike a spring which does.
if you apply a force to the damper it just moves stop applying a force it stops where you stopped giving it a force.

so on that basis I would say the shock would not and should not affect ride height.

now the peeps on ssc say that the high pressure gas shocks (bilstein) increase the height as they increase the spring rate.... baffles me tbh. but I havent looked at the construction of the damper yet...

may actually heighten it a bit, as the shocks you have now may be worn a bit and arent returning to the actually ride height there supposed to be, i doubt it will be much of a difference, when there worn in a bit they may settle down to the height you have now, hope that makes sense

wont do squat to the rear, the torsion bars are like the springs and the dampers are the damping force, so the ride height on the rear will always be the same (unless you used straight bars and no dampers)

Interest question - I shouldnt imagin that changing shocks would effect ride heigh only to the point of a few mm but Im sure they would settle down after a few days anyway.

theres a great clue in the phase 'spring rate' lol

    yay!!

Yes to have a very good handling uprated car you need bigger torsion bars to match the front otherwise you are dialling in more understeer...

So is the 25mm GroupA anit roll bar I fitted a waist of mullars without GroupA torsion bars, Kam?
  12. #12
not really. FWD cars as standard are designed to understeer whereas the fastest car will have a more neutral handling and a bigger rear antirollbar is a start in that direction. Torsion bars and antirollbars affect the handling in different ways though.

Ok im going to buy some billie rears if its ddefo not going to raise it up , is it a case of unbolting the two? bolts that hold the rear shocks in to replace them,... is there anything that needs supporting whilst doing this ?

    Thanks.

just two bolts really, you might want to put an axle stand or jack on the trailer arm after removing the standard shocks to make it easier to fit the new shock

Yeah just jack it up an unbolt the two bolt..new damper in..do the bolts back up..

    Took me 15mins.

Theoretically high gas pressure dampers will return to a datum - no one ever tried compressing a bilstein damper? It will return to full length.

That said though, the weight of the car is probably far more than is needed to overcome its desire to return to full length. If it raises it, it would be a negligible amount.

sorry to thread highjack but is there a difference between shocks on a mk 1.1 forte compared to a VTR?

How much are billie rear dampers???
