VTS with no ABS, MOT due soon, Help please!

  1. #1
w reg vts with no abs light.
    abs as standard im certain.
abs clearly is not working as i have just left 2 big black lines on the local dual carriageway.
abs dash light is, i guess, either broken or has been removed by previous owner.
will this fail me my mot?
is it best to leave it as it is (presuming it is going to be mot compliant), fix the abs problem entirely, or remove the abs entirely?
i have a 266mm brake conversion to be fitted post mot - so is the abs necessary anyway?
    what do others do?
    ta!

ABS is neccesary, how ever it depends how switched on your tester is too if he knows it should have abs etc, personally it sounds like someone has removed the bulb and it has a broken sensor probs.

you will fail your MOT, and the MOT tester wouldn't have to try that hard to notice it seeing as the ABS light will stay on. Try removing the sensors and cleaning them up a bit.

sounds like, the sensors have buggered up and some an easy fix was to take the bulb out of the abs warning light, but as far as Mot's i was told " if its there its gotta be working"

It's not a legal requirement to have ABS (obviously) but as Sean said... it will fail if it's meant to be there and it has been de-activated. Even if the warning bulb is removed, it'll still be picked up when the ECU is read. I think!?!

Why not have the car plugged in to a diagnotiscs machine, see which sensor is faulty and then sort it? It is then when you have the warning lights cleared and then it should pass the MOT (the ABS that is).

best thing to do is go round a few garages and say will u pass it with this faul i bet 50% will say yes as they want your £40 my local garage will pass anything

the light is now repaired, and is lit up.
front left and rear left on the code reader.
will clean the buggers tomorrow and cross my fingers.

how would it stay on if there is no bulb ?

cleaning wont do anything tbh as its a magnetic pulse, check your teeth on your shaft to make sure there are none missing, spray some contact cleaner on the conectors, and try disconnecting the battery too, if none of this works, new sensors are 52quid inc vat from citroen.

To give an idea of price, I had a front passenger side sensor replaced recently, cost my £120 for replacing and clearing the fault code.

Thats expensive, very very easy to change your self, remove wheel, remove nut that holds sensor on, and unplug it, refit new one, disconnect battery and elave half an hour, and then your away with no abs light
  12. #12
I didn't think it was that bad as citroen were quoting £75 for the sensor alone, I live in a flat in the town centre though so it isn't easy to do stuff like that on the main road!!
I'd still have to clear the fault codes though wouldn't I?

i got my codes removed at the local garage for a fiver!
    a bargain it seems.

I tried leaving the battery disconnected for a whole day and it still didn’t reset? Are there any other ways to do it?

    u checked ur fuse?
  16. #16
    my fuses are ok.
what other model of citroen/ pug uses saxo abs sensors? i reckon finding a broken vts locally will be hard.

mine did that for a while then just stayed on.You get used to it blinding you in the face.

tip-dash board airfreshener does a good job of hinding it,i forgot about it for a few weeks when i put that in front

changed the front sensor no problem, the rear abs sensor is a pain in the ass.
rusted solid, managed to remove most of the sensor bar the chrome sleeve.
    im soaking wet.
    round 2 tomorrow...

abs sensors now both in but light still on.
looking more closely at the passenger side driveshaft there is no abs teeth.
the cowboy previous owner has put a non-abs driveshaft on, new driveshaft is next on the shopping list, god damn.

i changed 1 of my rear ones about a month ago. £55 from citroen. was a nightmare getting the old one out though, had to get medievil on its ass as it was totally seized in there. simple job apart from that.
