VTR engine- 1.1 gearbox

  1. #1
i was told that if you couple a more powerful engine with a gearbox designed for less powerful cars you have fantastic 0-60 but naff-all top end speed. As all im looking for is acceleration, would a VTR engine conversion but using a 1.1 gearbox be any good or would it blow the car to the moon? thanks :-P

it is a true fact that puttin a 1.1 gearbox in a higher cc engined saxo will increase acceleration, but top end wont be as good. this is down to the closer ratio gears. A vtr will hit the limiter in 5th gear with a 1.1 gearbox!

yes wil give you more acceleration as lower ratos for the 1.1 engine, as havin not as much power as the vtr. But may destory the gearbox, or shorten the life of it, as havig more power goin into it may wear it quicker. Ive used this trick on novas etc before, but sad to say have blown a few boxes, hope this helps.

you dont want a 1.1. an s1, xsi or vts box in that order

    put a 1.1 box on my 1.4..

didnt make any noticeable difference to be honest...

if you want a better box..

look for a Rallye or XSi box

As said above acceleration will be good but you will lack top speed for a good combination of the two look at the 106 xsi box still good acceleration but different final drive.

I used to have an ax gt box in my vts which is the same as the 106 rallye box very good 0-60 time but would be hitting the limitter at 115 mph which is enough if you dont need it but nice to know its there.

I currently have a vtr box on the vts engine giving an anticipated top speed of 145 as the vtr has a longer final drive than any other box including the vts just lacks 0-60 slightly.

    Hope this helps.

i've got a VTS conversion and im running my old 1.1 box and everything is ok and still working so far. No knocks or bangs or explosions.
0-60 is good but car seems to top out @ bout 120-125 and its not hitting the limitter just doesnt seem to wanna go anymore. Im hoping thats its because of boot full of MDF and riding on 17's but there you go

If your on 17's is you speedo accurate to the speed?
  9. #9
im looking at using my 1.1 box on my vtr convertions and i dont really mind not haveing a really high top speed as i had a 1.1 any way so never had a top speed pluss ya cant use it to it's full potential being able to go 100+ on every day roads....

Why dont you go for a rallye or a xsi box then?

Rallye and xsi are very good on acceleration but have different final drive to the 1.1 box so you will still have the acceleration as well as the top speed if needed.

Why havent you dont a vts conversion just out of interest?

the main thing youll notice with a 1.1 box in a VTR, is that i presume the revs will be sitting higher at 70mph ; bad fuel consumption

    argh the 1.1 bullshite debate.

at least the rallye register have realised that the 1.1 box isnt the great box.

The GEARset is not a sports set, its not just the final drive that needs to be right but the gears themselves, they are not a sports set in the sports box, so there is a higher chance of being out of the powerband, they also use a smaller/weaker diff.

    1.1 boxes are pap.

vts/gti/s2rallye/s1rallye/1.4xsi/1.6xsi are a list of boxes with the sports gearset.

the final drives are different on them yet all use the same gears.

lol thanks for clearing that up suppose you will never now till you actually use it..my 1.1 box is th only box i got till i get my vtr reconditioned... so ill use it till i blow it..then put the vtr on..unles i get an S1 (if that the one ppl rave about) correct me if im wrong..

    regards

    XSI box
  15. #15
    S1 box, lol.
  16. #16
Its all about S1 boxes!!! :d
  17. #17
s1 box has the final drive most want, shoud theoretically give the best accel and lowest top speed

personally i recommend xsi boxes for daily drivers.

s1 boxes for more track day based.

been in an s2 boxed vts and that was fun to

I had an axgt boxed vts and now have a vtr boxed xsi conversion

I've never tried any other replacements to the standard box besides what I'm using now; the S1 box. Personally, I don't see it as a massive difference, so if I went out of my way to put an XSI box in, I would be disappointed for sure. If however, you require another box, and an XSI is available, then it would be sweet.

Agree with Ryan completely, using the S1 on the motorway is rather poor, as at 70 mph you are sitting a fraction over 4000 rpm, so fuel consumption is shocking. However, if you have to put your toe down, there's no issue with top speed, as at 7800 rpm I'm knocking on 130 mph. You don't really need to go any faster than that! Do you?

the final drive should help with in gear accelleration aswell.

god i cant wait to play with throttle bodies 16vs an atb and an s1 box!
  21. #21
    What are you waiting for?

I need 2 grand... I could put it on a credit card. Hmm

i need welding done! i cant get it on the road till then
