engine temp again.

ok took it to the garage, and been told nothings wrong with it. so let me get this right as im not good with mechanics. the guage goes up to half way ish bit higher. but it will also go right up to the red, not touch but get close n go bck down. mechanic says thats right coz the thermostat will open and let it thru or sumfing. he said the stat opens fine, the fan kicks in at the right temp. nothing wrong with the cooling system either. so what the hell can it b then? i asked possible problem with the guage, and he said shldnt b. could be sensor or something else. so what you lot think?

most saxo's run hot... mine is about 3/4 of the way up most of the time

dont worry about it - i have the same problem with my new radiator and ive got it checked and nothings wrong. its just shitroen cars for you. my gauge goes all nearly to the light then drops back to over half. i cant complain as my fan is kicking in more meaning the engines is cooler

i think mine runs hot too, being a 1.1 i cant tell whether its hot or cold until my fans on lol. your rad water level ok? and no air in the system?

Your best bet is to take the thermostat out yourself its only 3 bolts or something, boil the ketal and drop it in a jug of boiling water and see if it opens. If that works there are bledding taps across the engine, i think around 4 locate them and unscrew them, fill up the engine with water till they all spurt out and then its full. You shouldnt have a problem.

I had a problem with overheating and even brought a new thermostat. But it kept overheating till i found out the bledding points, i wasnt filling the water up enough so i opened all the taps and filled up. It should work for you.

mine runs at just over half, in traffic goes no more than 3/4

Its just the way saxos work. If it goes in the red and steam comes out of the bonnet then turn it off!!

is the fan suposed to some on before the light comes on ?
My temp light comes on and the fan and then doset go off !! Even when cold.
You have to reset the light with a fault scanner.
Does anyone know what the problem is ?
I have changed the temp sensor

try changin the thermostat ...or add more coolant 50/50 coolant and water. i did it it stays half way most of the time. but need to reset the radiator as doesnt come on till its on the red.

maybe a bit of air in the system? try bleeding it out. mine runs dead on halfway all the time.

my tempreture hardley ever moves no idea whats up with it.
  11. #11
Sounds like you may have air lock in the system matey!! have to bleed it few times,i had this when i fitted new rad into the vts!! it settled out in the end.....

Mine is closer to 3/4 alll the time, Always seems to drink water when i filll it but no leak, just fixed my fan so any one heared of water boiling??? and loosing water

Also seems to have brown crap in side the coolant bottle??? any ideas

I had the same fault were my temp light was coming on and the fan was kicking in and just not going off, i checked everything turns out my head was on it's way out at only 50k miles so i'd keep an eye on it

the temperature light shouldn't come on at all in normal operation. There's something wrong. Most likely the system isn't bled properly.

Do a REAL GOOD bleed through. See what that does. Remember not to use just water, but antifreeze also - very important.

If that doesn't solve it, more diagnosis is required. Check the thermostat as posted above - easy to remove, drop it in a cup of just boiled water, see if it opens. If not, buy a new one. £5-£10.

If it opens fine, then there's something else wrong. Could be as simple as a blocked radiator, or as bad as a warped head causing overheating.

Post back with the results of the first two items I've listed and we'll pick it up from there.

dammit, that's twice today I've got owned by a mega-bump and I've not checked the date. Meh.

Still, you never know, my "helpful post" might help someone. Perhaps in 3 years when the thread is next bumped

Holy shit bump and a half

Cant fathom why people bump posts from a million years ago though, it only shows itmore that they are after 100 posts

I have had this problem, small hole in the rad top hose
  23. #23
I`ll add my 10p`s worth could it not be down to a faulty gauge sensor?

It's been worrying me. I'm sure it stayed cool the whole time I drove over 200 miles on Friday, but yesterday and today the gauge is about halfway after only a couple of minutes, in traffic. So thanks to everybody for the reassurance.

Iv got this prob to but when I'm stood still it will shoot up then wen I'm driving it will shoot right back down to the blue and heaters are cold???
  26. #26
If your heaters are cold, it would suggest that you have no water in your heater matrix. Most likely caused by an airlock (if the rest of the system is full).

I would drain the entire system by disconnecting the bottom radiator hose, and fill it up again ensuring that you remove all airlocks.

A tip on filling (which I found by Googling and have been using for years) is to cut the bottom off a 2-litre coke bottle, and to pop the upturned bottle into the expansion bottle filling cap - the extra height of water you get by doing this raises the pressure head for filling and will help force out the air.

Fill the upturned bottle (and expansion bottle) to the brim, and open two of the bleed valves in turn (one that looks like a tyre valve at the rear left of the engine, and the other bronze bolt just above the thermostat). Once you have a steady stream of water out of these, start the engine and put the heaters on hot and run the engine until it is very hot (fan kicking in).

At this point, check the two bleed valves again, and lastly bleed the one on the top right of the radiator.

    This should prevent an airlock.

    This should work

Nice guide. Will update tomorrow after iv put the new therostat in as I'm not sure it has one with the temp gauge dropping to blue wen driving.
