Re-spraying your wheels - Guide

  1. #1
Hi, i know its something people always contemplate doing so i dida quick guide when i did mine today

Sooo, first things first... You will need

Various sand paper 240, 800, 1200 is what i used
Primer ( high build primer if you have deep marks )
Paint ( colour of your choice )
    Clear laquer

Right ill tell you how i did it, i understand there are people who do bodywork who may think thats wrong etc but this is how i did it

First remove your wheel from your vehicle and give it a good wash with soapy water then rinse off and dry.

Now starting with 240 grit sand down your wheel to get rid of any deep marks etc, once done go over this with 800 grit, Wash off again and dry, then mask wheel up and its ready for primer and should look like below

Now with the primer give it a very light coat so you can still see through to the previous colour

Leave this for 5 mins, then do the same thin coat once more and leave again, then after that give it a thicker coat covering all areas..

Leave your primer to dry for a hour or so, then flat down with 1200 grit paper ( wet ) and you should end up with something like the below, you should be able to feel how smooth it is also

wipe off again i just used a wet cloth then dried it with a heat gun..

Now its ready for paint grap your can of paint and the first coat should be very light, then leave for 20 mins, now i gave it another coat ( dont worry if it looks very mottled at this point, it doesnt matter ) Then your final coat should be quite thick and make sure you cover all areas evenly. You should be left with something like below..

Now this should be left to dry for about 30 mins before applying laquer, if you want to attempt a mirror finish you may want to leave it for 24 hours and polish the paint before the laquer but i didnt do this.

What i did now was got my can of laquer and heated it up using the heat gun, then applied one thin coat, left it for about 10 minutes, then applied my thick coat you should be left with it looking like below.

Thats really everything the finished product once dry is a good shiney finish

Hope i havent missed anything, if anyone wants to add anything feel free .

Good guide... but not as good as mine

EDIT: just had a proper look through your guide...

Your wheels won't last very long buddy... you didn't use nearly enough primer.... if you can still see through the primer you haven't used enough...

It's also recommended that you leave the primer for 24 hours before applying paint... and then leaving the paint for 24 hours before applying laquer... you rushed through it... you are meant to leave 15-30mins between each coat of paint... otherwise you'll get run lines...

You also didn't put in anywhere near enough preperation work... you can see the original black paint on the wheel... and you can see several imperfections... there is a dent in the face of the wheel... that needed filling... and several 'bits' stuck in the paint... as well as the fact there is some serious orange peel going on....

I know for a fact that pictures can hide lots of imperfections that would be visibile in reality... if you can see them in a picture they would be much worse in reality...

After your first few coats of paint your also meant to fine sand with some 1200 grit in order to remove the textured orange peel look of the paint... before applying further coats...

They look like you have done a pretty good job... but they just wont last that long...

TBH, Al, there are NO runs, Hardly any orange peal, I did cover the whole wheel in primer, and you only need to key and flat the existing paint if its in good condition which iti was.

TBH just look at FCS if you think you can see imperfections cause im quite confident you wont be able to find any
