Brakes Grinding...

  1. #1
i noticed it awhile ago, it sort of grinds every rotation when i brake, very noticable while coming to a stop, and dont feel very "safe" at 60 + mph to brake hard, I had it checked out at a local garage and they took it all apart found nothing wrong took it out for a drive and it stoped doing it. a week later its making the same noices again. i called the garage they think its a faulty caliper? does this sound right? anyone had this problem?

oh and it makes a sort of sqeeking noice when i listen with the window open, but when i put very slight presure on the brake, the noice stops... im confussed and lost at what could be wrong so am gonna buy a new caliper, but wanted to find out if anyone else has had this problem first, and if it realy is the caliper...

    Thanks

could be the disc is bent which is why it grinds at every rotation. that would make sense.

how old are your pads? how many miles they done?

Don't want to sound patronising (sp?), but have you checked the pads for crud that could have got caught in there?

Although when I had my quicksilver it had the same vibrations and when I slowed down using the brakes, if it was semi firm use of the pedal it made real bad grinding noise. I had warped disks.

I would have thought your garage would have checked if they were warped though, as mine checked mine, and they aren't the best garage in the world!

hmm thanks for the reply, how do i check for warped discs? put them on the floor and see?

The way mine were checked was the garage had this tool that stuck to the hub magnetically and had a bit that made contact with the disk. Then spin the disk round and if it moved it it showed up on the gauge. Kind of like an old record player is a way to describe it!

But diy way I'm not sure apart from buying the tool. I would take it to a garage to get it checked, mine didn't charge me for it and since he checked over them before and can't explain it they shouldn't charge you either I wouldn't have thought.
