gearbox worry?

  1. #1
just bought a vtr, notcied a noise when the cars in 1st and 2nd, at about 1500rpm, theres a noise coming from just above the gearstick is (well that area) like someone running there fingers up a comb.. after 2nd, nothing.

also theres a slight, very slight grinding noise when the clutch is up, put it down and its fine..

i wouldnt of normally bought a car with this noise...but the gearbox feels perfect, better than some new cars i have driven, feels tight and new..

    any ideas?

oh yeah, just to bump the thread..

ive been told that if you put your clutch down and the noise disapears, your box is mullered? in most cases..

i would of thought its more than likely a clutch job?

i love it how friends can brighten your day up...

    Hey Gartrell

I believe if the noise disappears with the clutch in but noisy with the pedal out (normal resting position) its the clutch release bearing or may also be known as thrust bearing.

I have the exact same problem on my saxo. You can replace the bearing seperate but by time the gearbox is apart you might as well replace the clutch too.

    Hope this helps

Don't worry mate, mines been making the noise since May. I am going to get mine sorted but just haven't got round to it just yet. It doesn't seem to affect the car at all, its just more of an annoyance with the noise.

Sh*te mine makes the noise like a spinning noise when the pedal is up in neutral, its been like it for months. How much is it to get sorted?

i bought a w-plate vts in april. wen i bought it, it wa making a noise when clutch was up but disappeared when i dipped the clutch. from xperience i had in a 306 i thought it would just be the release bearing.

went and booked car in for a new valeo clutch...£200 for parts n labour. however 3 days before taking it in i went to gti international at bruntingthorpe wi a m8, got off motorway on journey home and couldnt get it in gear, managed to get home and then to garage in the mornin.

i ended up needin a new gearbox n clutch at a cost of £600...wi a 6 month warranty...although i reckon that was a good price. before it went tho it felt great, xcept for crunchin into reverse.

from my xperience....get it sorted....aparently saxo gearboxes are notoriously unreliable....especialy vts.

I had this problem on my bro's old VTR he had.......at first it was just making grindin noises in 1st & 2nd and yeh noise disapears when u put clutch pedal down........of course we carried on drivin it then i took it to a garage but i thought yeh trust bearing gone cos it had all the signs of that gone

Anyway garage said no, the gearbox its knackard......it was then leaking oil u cud smell it through the vents when u put heaters on but of course carried on drivin it intill one night i was out by bros gf house......it started to fuck up got to gfs house then bro come out and parked it up as he was doing that.......bang just went clutch pedal right to the floor.......started up but nothin............got new box for £200 with delivery and then about £150-£200 fitting with new clutch aswell
