or sell the VTR, not buy the turbo kit and get yourself something already turbod. 6k can get you a stonking fast car

i would go for some kind of t25 hybrid, ive heard of people using t3's for mega power but i just dont think it would be useable in a vtr.200sx turbo, escort rs turbo turbo, renault 5 turbo to name a few possibilties.

also sorry to nag, but you really should edit your thread title..

    something like

whats the best turbo for a vtr engine????

t25 is best turbo for vtr engine im going to turbo my vtr engine in a few months once its all plumbed in and working you can use t3 but they dont really kick in till 5k rev t25 should be about 3k revs.

if you're going for driveability over outright power then T2 would be the one to go for, less lag but still big enough to give good power - Simo's vts ran 180@wheels on a T2 iirc, they're easy to get hold of too as a lot of R5 and Fiesta RST owners sell up when they upgrade from standard. Next up would be a hybrid, something like T2 exhaust side with T3 compressor to give pick up of the smaller T2 with the top end of a larger T3.

i think the t2 is is a good all rounder as my turbo kicks in around 2k revs and has very little lag. the t25 will probs have a better power increase as im sure carworx and cituning use t25 turbos. t3`s are far too big but can be good if you have mega bucks to spend on uprating just about the whole engine.

tbh i would buy another car already turboed - it is allot of hassle and reliability is always an issue especially if it is your daily car

as for companies - try carworx (although i hate them), cituning, dp motorsport or even ultimate velocity. gmc are very good but dont offer off the shelf turbo kits i think.

lets be honest as said a turbo kit for a saxo wont be cheap there is alot of better cars out there for your money... a DIY job can be done just get a T2 hybrid off something like a fiesta rs turbo then the hardest part will be the manifold and downpipe mating the pipes and cooler should be no hassle. hooked up with say 2 head gaskets!? but IMO wont run right would require a remap...

So is doable the 'bodging way' but the correct way will cost in the region of 2-4k i would have thought... But if it was me i can think of alot of better turbo cars out there for that sort of money

Ask your self a few questions first. What other modifications am I doing to the car. What boost level do you want to run. How much do you have to spend. There are plenty of people who have stuck random turbos on and skimped and to be honest every single one I have driven or seen working is a bag of shit. Most have a nasty habit of failing.

Most of what was said so far in incorrect. For instance the hole T number is actually a basic format of a turbo and not the spec of it. For a example a Metro Turbo had a T3 turbo and so do the early Escort Cossie. But as you can imagine the 90bhp Metro has a much smaller turbo than the 200+ bhp Escort.

Also turbos have gone forward in leaps and bounds in the past 15 years. They have also gone down in price dramatically. If I was you I really would not be looking at any of the old stuff. It is all getting very old and is next to useless by todays standards.

I picked up my GT2560 for under £300. You can pick up VNT25s for under £200 (though there a bit tricky to work with) a good one to look at is the MHI range of TD04 and TD05. Though the actual spec turbo you want will depend on what spec you are after.

What spec are you looking at your car to be?

The Fiesta RS turbo is renowned for being over spun as standard. You really would be pushing is on the VTR even at relatively low boost. The easy part in a turbo conversion is physically fitting the turbo to the car. The hard bit is stopping the ECU having a panic attack and your engine blowing apart. Even if you were to get it mapped it will still not run well and will not pass a MOT. If its a early model VTR you can do it if you swap a few of the other electrical parts and then get it mapped. The easy DIY way is to get MF2, SigCon2, 2bar map sensor and extra injectors, but even that is a little tricky to setup the first time.

There is no reason a turbo setup on a saxo should not be reliable assuming its done correctly.

i understand that but no matter how good the conversion is - reliability will still be affected. eg if you dont get forged pistons then the standard internals are going to give up some day
