VTS alternator pulley

  1. #1
    Hi there,

Well i wondered if anyone has had this trouble before. The VTS has been making this squeeking sound everynow and then, and has got worse, so i got the alternator belt changed and still had the same problem, oh well... i just lived with it

So there i am driving along one day and my steering goes incredibly heavy half way through a 60mph left hander.

Anyhow to cut a long story short, the steering was going light and then heavy, i thought it to be the alternator belt, as a battery light appeared whilst i limped home in my broken car

I took a look at it today properly to find this...

(with those bits of sealent/rubber? in the engine bay)

so i removed the pulley today and im gonna need a new one i think but wtf? surely its stupid to seal two bits of metal together like that, why isnt it 1 piece?

So are the pulley's VTS specific? repairable anyone come accross this before?

    Many thanks

    James

Yep, seem that a few times before, seems pot luck as some failed at low miles.

Needs to be a VTS pulley, other multirib ones like the VTR one are the wrong offset.

so whats the usual price for this replacement? is there any alternatives which are 1 piece, as i dont really want this happening again, its such a rubbish design!

yer i have also seen that happen a few times mate !

This same thing happend to mine mate. The little rubber bit is the damper, made more noise when cold and more electrics were being used right??? Mine did anyways then once heated up it was a lot better as it expanded. Basicaly you need to get a new one and they are only a citroen part and because of that they are £120 or so. Just put the new one on and all gravy!!!

i had this problem but abit of the rubber made my cambelt jump therefore bending valves - lol. Was a while back though, i got a brand new 1 from peugeot but then replaced it with a solid ally 1 from gmc. I brought that before xmas sometime i think.

thats quite unlucky having it throw the cam belt aswell. im currently doing the head gasket at the same time, so it wouldnt of made much difference for myself

what reg is ur car m8 it happened to ma m8s 53 plate the other week! and cost alot for the new part 2!

mines a V reg so its not exactly a spring chicken..

anyhow i called GMC earlier this week

they dont have standard size VTS pulleys only smaller pulleys which are usually used as part of the rotrex supercharger application.

works out about £76 delivered for the smaller one piece one

but im not sure if i can be arsed messing about getting a belt which will fit it

surely i can get a new rubber for this one and press it in, im even considering getting someone to seem weld it it back together
