Odd BHP Question?

According to a few website i've been reading the Saxo 1.1 came out the factory with 60Bhp, after a few years of engine wear & tear this has got to effect the BHP or am i wrong. If this does effect the bhp apart from tearing down the engine or something how can i regain the lost bhp.

can work the other way too man...

depends how the engine has been looked after.

if it has been owned by a mong then there is a chance there is noticeable wear which is reflected in the hp output.

pretty interested in this also. like on Top Gear when they all bought a porsche for under 5 grand or whatever it was. They did a RR and they had all lost loads of BHP, how can you get it back to its standard BHP without doing mods?

happens to the wear on the cam and other bits and bobs.

wear on the cam results in less travel in the valves and so less air and fuel blabbyblahblah.

moral of the story is dont rag your car from cold.

Im guess its a engine tear down then lol. Just thought it would interesting to see if a member with a standard Saxo has ever has there BHP re-checked?

im a sure someone will hav dude (btw im pissed so if my answer becomes stupidly arrogant and rubbish i apoligises in advanced)

all engines that pop out of the factory (from new) would run slightly different torque profiles anyway. so you could well find an owner that has a VTR running 99-100-101 hp

and 1.1 owner running 58-59-60-61hp etc... also it could be lower... its just the luck of the draw.

but with regard to running of the engine... yorkies is a mk1 VTR with about much power as mine (58hp)

i look after my engine... best engine oil on the market, regular servicing and bum-bum time, wont rag from cold etc etc.

im class basically.

Nothing like a pink on a saturday night! What would you recommend replacing when i get my used Saxo?

Anything unusual that wouldn't be done in a service or basically a full service?

*should* be ok man really... problem dont tend to show up until very very high mileage occurs.

several things to look at when viewing a potential car...

1) the owner isnt a mong
2) the owner doesnt just 'use it for a run to shops' two mins away
3) the owner isnt on saxp
4) the owner has a full service history
5) the owner uses decent quality engine oil, by that i mean Fully Synthetic (magnatec GTX is NOT fully synthetic and thus should be avoided)

I'm really really picky when it comes to cars so you might be happier to accept less than that or you might be pickier. the only thing you can do is to get a drive of several of the model you are interested in an go from there.

high mileage on saxo's is nothing to fear...the engine is the only bit that is actually durable

Just got a couple of questions if you dont mind?

Is there any faults that i should look our for like rust on rear wheel arches or in the boot, or any mechanical faults that i should look for.

The reason why those porsche's lost soo much power is due to a couple of things, they were all old dogs and they had quite a high power output when new..A higher tuned engine will take more effort from the owner to keep its maximum power..

There was a 106 rallye for sale a while ago, 219k miles, never rebuilt and was completly standard engine wise and was rolling roaded, still standard bhp..

Thats pretty amazing.. 219k! must have been well maintained.

Yeah, i think my old engine had had a hard life from cold etc, headgasket went at 92k.
Got another engine in there now, and it seems spot on - I always let it tick over for a few minutes in the mornings and so on..

Sorry to bump this ancient thread lol. But can you see any of this wear? I mean can you see scouring on the camshaft etc? Im just wondering because I was looking at mine today and it looks mint tbh which I didnt expect, Iv never ragged it from cold, but it has hardly any service history so i expected it to be a mess under there.

Any engine thats been well looked after ie not ragged or un-serviced should still be pretty good bhp wise. A good service always helps, if your worried that yours is running abit under and is pretty high mileage maybe a new cam and few other bits along with a full service could breath a bit of fresh life in to a older motor, but unless its over 100k I personally wouldnt bother.

50-60bhp is enough to get some people in trouble, treat yourself to a nice back box to make the car sound faster and a set of lowering springs and good tyres on dumpy little alloys and improve the handling.

A good handling car will out perform a car with more power everytime

My mate who i work with was sayin that a New Fiesta ST was put on the RR and the BHP was something like 128bhp when they shud have something like 147bhp
