How-to-Guide: Fitting and wiring Mk2 Angel Eyes

  1. #1
Here is a step by step guide to wiring and fitting Mk2 angel eyes...

    What do you need?
    A set of mk2 angels
A crimp set or electrical junction boxes can be used
    Electrical/waterproof tape
    Wire cutters/strippers
    Socket set with 10mm socket
    Flat head screwdriver

Removing the plastic trim from under the lights:

First things first you need to lift up the bonnet.. if you don't know how to do that you don't have the skills needed to fit the angels

Then we need to remove the plastic trim stips from underneath the headlight.. they are head in with three plastic clips, two clips connect it to the wing and one clip holds it to the headlight...Here you can see the clip that connects the trim to the headlight...

Remove the clip that connects it to the headlight.. the best thing to do is to pull it slightly then slot the flathead screwdriver between the clip and the headlight unit and twist.. it should pop the clip out like this...

Next we need to remove the two clips securing the trim to the wing, these are rather fidly to remove... you need to pull them gently straight out towards you when your facing the car.. they need to be pulled out straight or you'll snap the retaining tabs... as you pull them out a gap will be formed between the trim and the wing.. you can fit the screwdriver in and prize the clips out as before... (don't worry too much about snapping clips as they are easily replaced.. just dont break the trim!)

    Removing/fitting the headlight itself:

Now the trim has been removed you should be able to see the three retaining bolts (10mm) for the headlights...

I would recommend removing the bottom one first as it's the most awkward to remove.. you can bend the bumper down slightly whilst doing it... but be gentle and try to avoid this if possible...

Once all the bolts are removed place them in a safe place... then the fiddly part is wriggling the light out.. lift the tab on top of the headlight up slightly, there is a small tab that clips it on.. once this is lifted the unit should wriggle out.. you need to take it straight out towards you.. as there are locating lugs on the bottom of the headlight, you also need to squeeze the bottom of the headlight unit over the bumper that's an extremely tight fit... i recommend you take your time being as gentle as possible remember once the light is free from the car the wiring is STILL ATTACHED so be careful...

Once the light is free disconnect all wiring clips... you need to disconnect the indicator plug (grey/white), the sidelight plug(brown), the main headlight plug(black) and the motor adjuster plug(small black and yellow plug)...

To remove the sidelight and indicator plug you need to prise off the wire clip with a flat head screwdriver then they just slide off.... the main headlight plug just pulls straight out... and the adjustor motor clip needs the tab pushing in whilst sliding it out...

That's the headlight free from the car!!!

    The wiring part!

    Preparing the car wiring:

Cut the end off the sidelight connector leaving about 5cm of wire behind the plug...

Then strip the ends of the wires and attach female crimps to the original sidelight wires... then wrap electrical tape around the back of the crimp to ensure it is secured and waterproof...

Cover the end of the motor adjuster plug in electrical tape as this is NOT required for angel eyes as they are manually adjusted...

Take note the GREEN WIRE = NEGATIVE/EARTH and the RED WIRE=POSITIVE/LIVE

The wiring should now look like this.. all ready for the headlight to be connected up..

    Preparing the angel eye wiring:

Ok before doing this you need to decide what you want to use as your sidelights... angels have four possible sidelights.. there is an LED and the top of the light, the standard sidelight bulb, and two halo rings.. each one is wired in seperately so you need to decide what you want to wire in..

When wiring in these i have wired up the two halo rings and the LED, i have put my standard sidelight bulbs in but NOT wired them in..

Twist the three black wires together and connect a male crimp, twist the three red wires together and connect a female crimp.. apply electrical tape to the back of the crimp to ensure it's water tight...

Optional extra: if you want your original sidelight bulb to function aswell, connect up the three red wires and the RED positive of your original sidelight plug and crimp them together... then connect up the three BLACK wires and the negative of your original sidelight wire and crimp them together.. then connect the sidelight plug..

That's the light prepared and ready to fit!

    Connecting up the wiring!

Offer the light up to the car and connect all of the wiring... ensuring that the crimps are connected RED - RED and BLACK - GREEN
Once the crimps are connected tape over them completely so they are fully waterproof...

The wires should all be connected as seen here:

I would strongly recommend testing the bulbs at this stage to ensure everything is working correctly.. so you don't have to keep fitting and removing the headlight...

    Refitting the headlight:

Follow the reverse of the headlight removal stage to reconnect the headlight, be careful when fitting the headlights not to snap the top tab...

Make sure the bolts are fastened securely but don't overtighten them..

It should look something like this:

Then the plastic trim can be refitted below the light by simply pushing the clips in... attach the side to the wing first...

Ensure all tools etc. are removed from the engine bay.. close the bonnet and admire your hard work...

    Job's a good'un!

    Hope that helps!
    Alex

    Some more information for you:

    Broken Clips:

If you managed to snap some of the clips from the headlight trims when removing them they are easily accessable on ebay... from an ebay shop called 'paragonpug'.. they are called "PEUGEOT DOOR MOULDING CLIPS 106,206,207,306,EXPERT"

Here is a direct link to the item: http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.d...m=250151235173

    Steamed up lenses:

If fitting your angel eyes on a hot day you shouldn't have any problems with the lenses steaming up.. if you notice over time that the lenses of the angel eyes becomed steamed up when in use (especially during cold whether) there is a simple solution!

Remove the rubber cover from the back of the headlight (covers back of headlight).. hold a hair dryer in the back of the headlight until the air inside the headlight is warm, this will make any water vapour inside the light condense and escape the light... then refit the rubber plug before allowing it to cool.. this should prevent any further steaming up issues

    Bulbs / bulb upgrades:
Angel's use H1 type bulbs.. DO NOT use HID kit's in them as they will melt the plastic lenses..
Angel's come as standard with halogen bulbs.. but xenon upgrades are available.. that omit 50% more light... i have an Xenon upgrade on mine - you can see the blue bulbs... i will post up some pictures of the xenons at night so you can compare them to the standard bulbs...
These can normally be purchased as an add-on package to the angel eyes...

    Indicator bulbs:
The angel eyes themselves are supplied with orange standard bulbs, but with the angel eye's clear lenses the orange bulb stands out and looks out of place... Silvatec indicator bulbs can be bought, the bulbs are silver in appearance but glow with an amber tint.. they are FULLY road legal and E-marked...
These can normally be purchased as an add-on package to the angel eyes... or www.rimstyle.com sell them..

    Changing/replacing the headlight bulbs:

Sadly i don't have any photo's of this process.. but here is a little guide to swapping over the headlight bulbs... Also remember not to touch the glass part of the bulb when fitting new bulbs.. as grease on your fingers can perish them...

Firstly distinguish which bulb you are trying to access...

    The normal headlight bulb:

you have to twist the round cap.. it's really stiff.. twist it anti clockwise to undo i believe.. i think it has an arrow on it..

It will slip round abought a 3rd of a turn.. then it can be pulled off..

Then you will see a spring loaded metal wire clamping the bulb in.. you need to push the wire down and to the side to unhook it.. once you've unhooked it you should be able to pull the bulb and wiring out of the unit...

Then you need to pull back the rubber insulation coats off the crimps then un attach the crimps from the bulb and replace bulb.. and do the complete opposite to put it back together... the crimps will be a really tight fit and are rather fidly to get out...

    The full beam headlight bulb:

Remove the rubber cap on the back of the headlight...

Amazing guide mate. So just to clarify . . . you have just used the two halo rings as your side lights?
  4. #4
I have connected up the two halo rings.. AND the white LED as my sidelights

I have connected up three red and three black wires.. one set of wires for each ring and one set for the LED..

You can see them all here from when i wired them up the first time round... but this time i DID NOT wire in the orange standard sidelight bulbs...

So what would i crimp together if i only want the halo rings?
  6. #6
Just the two red wires and two black wires.. it is fairly obvious which set of wires are responsible for which halo ring/LED as they are located near to the bulbs...

  7. #7
Ok thanks i think i should use the led and i also have Xenon bulbs to install too

So how would you wire them up and retain your sidelights? What crimps would you use, and how?
  13. #13
above he has wired the two halo rings and the small LED as the sidelights
  14. #14
I have LED's in the original sidelights too so I wanna keep those too....
  15. #15
yeah well in that case follow the above guide exactly and you will be fine, I will be doing mine tomorrow

Will do, i shall add them to my progress thread
  18. #18
Does it make much difference not having wired in the original sidelights?
  19. #19
Yes... the halo rings are more noticeable... even with the headlight bulbs in...
  20. #20
I had the camera out in the garage with me tonight so thought id take some pictures for you Alex, so you can see what it's like without the sidelight bulbs wired in....

This is my fresh new set of angels

Awesome guide, getting close to getting mine, know doubt this guide will prove useful

Just a question about Xenon HID kit's melting the plastic, from what I've read HID kits actually draw less current and therfore emit less heat, infact Rimstyle sell a HID option with there angel eyes as well, so my question to you guys is there a proven case where by someone actually melted there angel eye by using a HID kit? Maybe even Garyvts of Rimstyle could confirm whether or not this is the case or not?

    ManC
  23. #23
Can you show me a link to the HID kit available for angel eyes??? there are stickers on the back of the unit saying NOT to use HID's....

They offer an Xenon bulb upgrade.. but not an HID kit as far as im aware...

    Alex
  24. #24
Below is the link to rimstyles page with there HID kit

    http://www.rimstyle.com/pages/produc..._vdx;id=VDXKIT

Keep us posted if you find out how/why angel eye headlights wont accomadate HID kits.

    Thx,

HID kits are too powerful to work with angel eyes.. i think they run at a higher temperature, and the lenses are not guaranteed to sustain the HID beam without cracking... there are stickers on both sets of angels i have received saying DO NOT USE HID KITS with these lights...

The only lighting upgrade you can do is to use the Xenon bulbs rather than the standard halogens..
    Show on Rimstyle Here

The HID kit link you have shown is compatible with standard saxo headlights, but they have glass lenses.. mk2 angel eyes have plastic lenses...
The lenses on my angels cracked just using the standard halogens they came with lets hope this set lasts a bit longer!

    Alex
  26. #26
    Hi,

Having now received mine I can see there is a sticker on there saying "HID's NOT ALLOWED", you can interpret this in many ways, my interpretation is that they are now allowed on Saxo type vehicles rather than they can damage the headlight, I'm going to chance my luck and fit a set of hid's with these headlghts, shall keep you guys posted on whether or not they melt/crack the headlight.

Can you stick up 2 pics for me.. (I just wana look at something)
    1) Lights on dipped beam
    2) Lights on full beam

I presume dipped beam is the light in the outer rings and the full beam is the one in the inner rings.....

    Chars...

    Hi

our VDX HID Kits are now at £129 and have been fitted inside Ultra angel eyes successfully with no problems at all. We can also do packages if you were looking to buy both together

  40. #40
this might sound daft but how do you adjust the height of the beam because it looks as if one of my beams is higher than the other one!!??
  41. #41
I got a garage to set mine to a legal height because with angels eyes you can't adjust them from car manually.
  42. #42
gutted because i thought that the screw on the bak of the headlights done it
  43. #43
    excellent guide
  44. #44
    fairplay......... looks the dog's danglies!
  45. #45
Fitted mine today and they look lush, is it the metal wheel thing on the back that adjusts them??
  46. #46
there are screws on the back of the lights that adjust them mate...can easily do it yourself
  47. #47
    Amazing Guide! Thanks!
  48. #48
nice guide mate, going to get me some of those, whats a decent price to pay? ive been looking on ebay recently and they seem to go between 70-80 pound, thanks Tom
  49. #49
The glass on mine has seemed to have lots of small cracks, anyone know why this might be? I'm using standard bulbs btw.
  50. #50
Just read how to fit angel eyes to my mk2 VTS great guide by the way!
I wanted to know... if the angel eye headlights light the road up alot better than the std headlights with 100w xenons?
I used to have a Zetec Sport fiesta and the headlights were great but the VTS seems to be pointing at the floor and very dim... even with 100w Xenons in and adjusted as high as they will go!
Help pls, any piccys would be appreciated!
  51. #51
iv got these lights and there are two blue LED's at the top that come on with the rest of the lights.... im sure these re ilegl and as my car stands out enough anyway i am thinking of disconnecting these. this guid has helped thanks.

does anyone know for sure, these are illegal??
  52. #52
they only illegal if they flash or flicker if the blue lights are still you fine
  53. #53
oh ok thank you. i always thought otherwise but u seem sure

Found a seller of the Angel Eyes with this in the description:

"THESE LIGHTS WILL WORK WITH THE AUTOMATIC HEIGHT LEVEL ADJUSTMENT IN YOUR CAR"

    "EASY TO FIT IN MINUTES"

According to this thread though, both of those statements are a load of bollocks?

I purcahsed some black angels for my saxo and im waiting for them to be delivered,i cant wait to get them fitted,,it make such a difference to the front of the car i think,,i also got some xenon bulbs for free included in the package all for £124 and free p+p,i thought that was a good deal tbf..ill get pics up when there done.
  61. #61
Ok so mine arrived - even though I emailed the seller asking if they deffinitely work with the headlight adjusters, that was a lie, as there is nowhere to attach the motor. And fitting is the same as this guide suggests, so is not really a "simple in minutes job", but is doable of course! I've got mine booked in with a citroen garage to get them fitted and aligned tomorrow so I don't have the worry of shitting it up..I'll post pics when it's done
  62. #62
Mate, follow the guide and have a go yourself - you dont want to pay Citroen £30 an hour in labour do you?

You cant go wrong if you follow this guide and take your time.... plus you will have the satisfaction of doing it yourself. Im a novice and did my own just took it to my local garage for alignment and he did it for free!
  63. #63
Mine are now fitted and looking great - got a question though - are the dipped beam lights supposed to turn off when the main beam lights are on? Cos that's what's happening with mine, and I don't know whether that's right or not and how it can be fixed if it isn't, considering it's just one plug..?

I've just bought an X reg 2000 vtr and whoever had it last has fitted angel eyes

Only problem is they damaged the headlight trims, lost the plastic clips for them too and the front bumber is sagging slightly.

I'm hopeless with this sort of thing and I don't trust myself to fix it DIY so I might see if my local citroen dealer will do it....
  67. #67
A very good guide, thanks for sharing

I need to get some new headlight bulbs for mine, its got standard halogen bulbs in at the moment i think. I went in to Halfords to pick up some Extreme Brilliance while the BOGOFF offer is on, but the bloke said i wont notice it that much even though the pack says 90% more brighter with Xenon technology.

I got some xenon ice blue(bright white wiv tint of blue) headlight bulbs off the bay, 2 Main beam/dipped, 2 Fogs and 2 sidelights. something like £11.99 delivered.

Just halfway through fitting them now but the glorious british weather has made me come indoors to wait

p.s just tinted my headlights in satin black, do look fEkin awesome.
  79. #79
Hey, great guide this, my angels are on order and gonna use this when fitting them.
Just a quickie, how did you get the rings blue? Is it just a case of changing a couple of bulbs?

    Thanks,
    Dan
  80. #80
nope buddy they come like that as standard mate
  81. #81
nice one pal, I can't wait to get 'em they're gonna look awesome. Apparently there's also a way to wire in all the sidelights without cutting the wires, providing you retain your existing sidelight bulbs, so think I'm guna give that a go. I have LED's in anyway so should look pretty cool, will make sure to put pics up when finished

Which xenon bulbs have you got? just because the ones I've bought before off the bay have been a bit rubbish aha thanks

    Thanks

Will help me alot when my angels eyes arrived. Ordered them today
  84. #84
    Preparing the car wiring:

Cut the end off the sidelight connector leaving about 5cm of wire behind the plug...

Bit stuck on this why do you have to do this. Just recieved my angels today and need to know before fitting them.
  85. #85
You have to cut the sidelight connector block off as it only has 2 wires (possitive and negative) whereas the angel eyes have 6 wires (3 positive and 3 negative), therefore if you cut the connectors off you can use connectors to connect them all.

The only problems i found was getting to the bolt behind the bumper as it's a bitch to reach! lol The other pain was that it says that the allignment motor works with these lights but because they naturally dip completely down they are too far into the whole for the motor arm to reach. I just put the original adjusters back on and used a socket screwdriver

    This is how mine look:

So which wires need to be connected for this. Would it be the 2 sets of black and red wires which are situated on the top of the back and directly below it under the round black circle?

I have LED's in anyway so should look pretty cool, will make sure to put pics up when finished
what i did was get some spade crimps on the end of the wires by wiring first the 3 together into one extra wire, then pushed that into the sidelight plug. its a bit dicky though, comes loose sometimes, but means i can easily change back to standard

it is illegal to show any blue or red light at the front, you will get a fine and possibly points. Its becasue it imitates police.

    Hii,

how do i just get the halo rings lit up and the led light in each head light, like in the pic of this quote?

someone let me knw pleasee... becuase as they are wired up standard the orange bulbs cover up the nice glow of the halo and ya cant see them very well, so want to get rid of the orange bulb being there. how do i get it out of the wiring or shall i just take the orange bulbs out? many thanks.

I know this is probably a stupid post... But I'm havign a lot of trouble getting the bulb out of the main beam. Any reason why? I can get to the back of it etc but it just wont come out and I dont want to force it for obvious reasons.
  110. #110
This might just be me being a bit thick but just wondered if dip beam stays on when you go onto main beam like my 306 used to?
  111. #111
No the dipped beam does not stay on

yeah i had this problem with the crimp connector been in too tight, you have to really wobble it wile pulling it out, also you could try put a flathead in and push it out.
  113. #113
great guide, helped me so much! would recommend to anyone
  114. #114
    just fitted mine yesterday

  115. #115
    Quality thread really helpped !
  116. #116
If you dont want to snip the o/e sidelight wires you can use 2 of the wires from the headlight beam adjust motor that are not used on with the new lights... that plug also has a power supply when the lights are switched on.
  117. #117
Can anyone recommend some H1 Xenon bulbs to replace the standard Main/dipped beam bulb?

I bought some off ebay but they are still have a yellowish tinge to them..

    Thanks
  118. #118
Used this guide to fit mine. Very much appreciated

got a mk1 with angels but they are diff to the ones you have pictured, there is no led at the top, also only 1 ring lights up on each side, also behind the rubber where the blulbs go im missing the spring thing to keep the bulbs in place, they have been wedged in with a bit of wood on both sides, (by last owner not me)

any1 know were i could get these from as mot coming up soon and lights are pointing here there and everywere apart from the road lol

You can... but... big but you'll melt the lenses. They're plastic. Plus you'll dazzle every other motorist...
Angels are powerful enough with Osram Nightbreak Plus' in.
