Gearbox??!!

  1. #1
Hi, the box on my 01 vtr is about to go and i wondered if there is a better box to replace it with. A lad i work with reckons a 1.1 box is the way 2 go but he had a vtr for 2 years and went through 1 vtr box and 2 1.1's!! so obviously not the most conservative driver. im not too bothered about top end speed, would rather it be a bit more nippy off the line. im going to put a new clutch on whilst the box is off so does anybody have any advice on which clutch to go for aswell?

    any suggestions please.

1.1 will be quickest option but will not hack the pace 2 long m8
(youll go threw them like fuk m8)

    if u got 4 a 1.4 it will b quicker 2 n a bit harder wearin than the 1.1

ive got a vts engine in ma vtr runnin the vtr gear box there is not a difference between they 2 :Y:

forgot to mention its superchipped so revs to about 7,200, any opinions welcome pleeeease
  4. #4
didnt know a super chip makes the revs higher go for a 1.4xsi box or a s1 ralle box
  5. #5
even vts/gti box or s2 rallye will help your acceleration
  6. #6
all the boxes are the same strength iirc. all have the same diff.

correct me if im wrong tho.

dont think it has to but had mine done at abp motosport and they moved the limiter up 1,000rpm aswell.

so the 1.1 box is no weaker?? y does everybody seem to think that they are going to blow within weeks??

would go for the s1 box but cant find one anywhere and im on an apprentices wage (fcuk all) so need a cheap option tbh.

    any advice on clutch??

    thanks

The VT's have bigger difs, and they also have bigger driveshafts than the 1.1's

I posted up all the ratios the other day - MA Gear ratios

Just because it will rev to 7200rpm doesn't mean there will be any power there... iirc the ideal shift point on a VTR is below the stock limiter (6250rpm) so there’s not much point going past there unless its cammed.

A VTS/Gti box would be a good choice, for even better acceleration go for the s2rallye/1600xsi or the 1400xsi...

ive ran both the vtr n vts gear box ad there is no difference in acceleration there basicly the same box m8 if only put the vtr 1 back in bout 2 wks ago n i dont c any difference btween them so i personaly think its a waste of time puttin a vts 1 on it m8

Final drives are different so you will see a difference in acceleration between the two boxes. Either you cant drive or you had 2 of the same gearbox.
    And type in English

ive had a vts gear box and a vtr 1 on both my vtr and vts engine and belive me there is not a difference m8 been there n done it have u ???????????????????????????????????????????????

What makes you think it was a VTS/VTR box? They were probably the same box like said... either that or you don't know the differece between the two!I know for a fact I would be able to tell the difference! Have a look at the gear ratios.. theres a big difference!

I've already given you some bad rep for the rubbish you posted at the start of this thread... It won't let me give you anymore unfortunatly!

When i put a vts box in a vtr the difference was very noticable. Not just in the "feel" but the revs at certain speeds changed. Cant remember of the top of my head but i think there was like 250rpm difference at 60 in 5th.

The vts box started crunching into 2nd (what you get when you pay £60 on ebay for one) so i sourced a 1.4 xsi box. That again changed the revs at certain speeds.

I have nearly been conned about 4 times when buying boxes. I had to go to 5 different brakers to get a genuine box. The codes on them can get pretty hard to read.

A taller final drive box is deff worth the money

1.1 boxes are also one of my least favourite 'rumours' for performance.

they do have a smaller and weaker diff than the vt box, and do not have a sports gearset.

also people kill boxes usually because they jam the gears.

b-christie you have been asked once to stop using text talk. it doesnt cost you more per post to write without m8, u etc...

yeah its a shame about matt! he should have just flogged the box and bought another 's one!

HAHA! feel free to send cheques payable to.........

hows the 8v btw? what happened in the end about dubai?
  24. #24
thats what he has done fitting a standard box back in

the 8v is coming on just waiting for some platigague to turn up so i can set up the bearing clearance properly(if i can find the right size bearings) and got a Head stud and nut conversion for it so i can throw in loads of boost and gas lol

Dubai is on hold for a while as something has come up (well it will in about 9 months )

LOL at ur boost and gas addiction!

Fair play dude, i just remebered about it and thought id see how it went if you had gone, obviously not now.
  26. #26
still will go but not for a few years but defo going before it starts school so got 5 years lol

(its all about the boost and gas, pieter at DP recons the block is good for 500bhp so im going to try for 600 lol)
  27. #27
600!! u are an insane man you are! insane indeed!

Im gonna have to come see it one day! seeing as im only just up the road now!

Just outta interest bud, i looked @ vts limiter on 1.1 box and the vts box and the 1.1 box look similar @ mph in each gear?
is that nothing to do with the "gearset"?
  29. #29
lol sorry mate its a habbit with msn lol

ill try and stop it people
  30. #30
ok thanks guys, still not sure what to go for but will probably try and find a 's' box.

standard valeo. dont fit black diamond or shit like that
  32. #32
as ryan says one of our customers has a 175bhp 16v 106 and that killed 2 helix clutches but has done many track days on a standard valeo item and is spot on

glad you backed me up dude, i get fed up of people going on about 'uprating' the clutch to something which isnt actually uprated really lol
  34. #34
we tried the organic helix in rich's car and it was shit then we fitted a helix padel and that was crap but the valeo is spot on

the helix padel went in my car but only lasted 3k before it shit itself, i also killed a Techniclutch in 4k on my car and another customer killed a techniclutch in his 16v S1 rally (standard engine apart form exhaust) and thats done nearly 10k on a valeo unit

rally box all the way mate ive had um in my gtis an got one going in my vtr asap just upgrade the clucth to whilst its apart an change the bearing aswell.
  36. #36
if u want to put tht 1.1 box in then ur goin to use a shit load of fuel. ive got a m8 who has a c2 VTS which was fitted with the wrong box from factory (dont ask me what box it was) but it used to bounce of 115 on the limiter and it used a shit load of fuel. If your looking to put i new gear box in your and you want acceleration id stay with your VTR box as the gears are 20% longer than a vts box.

uprate the clutch? are you blind? or did you just not read the posts above about clutches?

accelleration wont come with as you put it 'longer gears' from the vtr box. try fitting a vtr box to a vts and ull have slower acelleration.

also the 20% is shit tbh. The final drive is the huge difference. the gearset itself isnt a 'longer' gearset

check ssc, the rev drops between gears vary alot, this effects performance.

and the speed has a few mph difference. Remember the speed in each gear isnt just it, the rev drops are what effect performance.

Fair enough, ty for pointing that out Ryan.
