ABS for MOT

  1. #1
Hey guys, need a really quick answer to this.

My ABS light is on on the dash and i just tested the brakes and sure enough no ABS.

I've cleaned the sensors and unplugged the battery but iv got my MOT in about an hour.

Will it fail for the ABS not working?

    Cheers

    MOT Checks

From reading the first bit, it looks asif it's likely to fail... Unfortunately...

just read through the haynes manual, and it doesnt say anything about abs not working.

could not just say you disabled it, yet the light still shows?

To pass the MOT, ABS if fitted has to be working.

How long is the walk home?

yes unless your mates with the mot tester

Take the speedo's out and put some tape inside them over the light.
    Remove it once done.
I'm sure they won't test the ABS, as they have no actual way to do so?
    Worth a go tbh?

the Light idea could potentially work although pretty dodgy!!

i worried on my MOT as my car had the engine light on! it passed though so im not really worrying about it. Hasnt effected the car's efficiency, emissions or general performance... only thing it cud be is remote locking as its gone caput.

To those saying take the bulb out, or put tape over it - the correct operation of the ABS warning lamp is checked on the MOT.

Would it not be better to try to diagnose and rectify the original fault rather than trying to pass the MOT in a car that you don't know what faults it has?

    yes.

...you can wire the abs light up to the oil pressure light so the abs light comes on when the ignition is turned and goes off again after a few seconds (like it would if it was working)...and hey presto, mot in hand!

Lot of effort to re-wire the Lights though
Either tape over it, or check the sensors, could just be a dodgy sensor replaced for a couple of quid.

you cant tape the light over, abs pump is obvious to the tester (plus, the testers know what has abs as standard etc, its all computerised innit), and the dash needs a light to come on and go off to indicate it works.

    Yeah so tapes out then..
Could be a diagnostics job.. Or check all the sensors etc..

How'd the MOT go anyway mate?
  13. #13
coveringt the lights up IS illegal
and they test the brakes on the rolling road thingy (its like sand paper stuff)
just hope they dont check it will be fine i hope

Called it off last minute, would be like sending a lamb to the slaughter

I should be able to swap the sensors for a spare set i have and see if that works.

Cheers for the speedy reply dudes, test is rebooked for monday so ill update on how it goes!

Take the bulb out for the MOT test to get it to pass
the brakes will work fine all abs is for is to stop you locking the wheels
    under hard braking

Then you will need a meter with ohm`s on it
jack the car up so you can turn the wheel
to test the sensor unplug the sensor and put your meter in the end of the plug set meter to ohm`s and take the reading write down your reading on a pad
  16. #16
What is your`s 2 sensors or 4 (rear discs)
  17. #17
In the Mk2s they are SMD type LEDs so i would need to desolder it to disable it, or obstruct the view of it using tape/bluetac etc.

I cant figure out how to unplug the sensor though, so i'll start a new thread to get some help with that
  18. #18
undoing these bulbs is illegal to remove the warning lights even if u obstruct them just so you are warned....
  19. #19
I'd rather fix it anyway mate, chances are if i bodge it, ill need the ABS on the way home from the MOT station or something

Thread to help me fix my ABS - Here

i woulsnt imagine the central locking would cause the engine management light to come on. id go somewhere and get it on the diagnostics to find out why its on

Had the same problem about 15 mins ago. hard judder on the wheels, then the light came on. wont go off, so will be checking the discs, pads and the sensor(s) tomorrow, what a fun day for the missus
