have lost my locking nut! what do i do!!

  1. #1
hi guys. really need answers fast lol

i have been an absoutle toool and have some how lost my alloy wheel locking nut. i have a flat passneger side tyre and need it replaceed or just my spare on because i have work tomorow afternoon.

what can i do? and what needs to be done to remove it.

logically i am thinking that they can weld a bolt head to the head of the locking wheel nut, let it cool and harden and then just un-screw it as usual with the wheel wrench??? or will it need to be drilled?

    prices please if you know

    thanks rob

Most garages can just bang a smaller socket on it and get it off.

Do you have a picture of it?
  3. #3
You could try and force/hammer on a socket thats just too small if you have a socket set you dont mind busting one of them.
  4. #4
I bought a socket that screws onto the nut as you try to undo it. It basically has a reverse thread on it, got it from Halfords. Got 4 off with it!!
  5. #5
What type of locking wheel nut is it? Can you get a picture? I got a few different types lying around in the garage.
  6. #6
yeah i will get a pic up now. thanks guys

    my camera wouldnt let me upload the pics onto my pc. so here is some that are the same as mine;
  8. #8
Sorry bud not got any type that will fit them, got a few types but not any like that.

Them ones will be hard to get off.. not sure if a socket will hit over them.

Do you still have the receipt of where you bought them? You could go back to the shop and explain your situation?

Or if you know anyone in the motor trade you could ask if they could get off. I remember bodging a mates off using a screwdriver and hammer lol.

this gets asked like every other day now! best bet is to go to a garage like above, smash a smaller socket on and jobs a gooden

These are exactly the type I got off with this socket with a reverse thread inside it. So as you try and loosen the locking nut, the socket tightens onto the nut to help loosen it. Got all 4 off in about 30mins

    bit scarred now lol.

    i've only just been payed!

hopefully he garage can do it cheaply.

    anyone know any rough prices
  13. #13
just buy these sockets, only about £15. Was a two man job hitting the socket on whilst turning the breaker bar to loosen the locking nut.
  14. #14
Garage should only charge 10/15 quid to take them off tops mate.

have these locking nuts got the spinning thing on the outside if so its gona b alot harder than just getting a smaller socket and bashing it on what i would do is go to halfords and get a locking nut set that look like its exactly the same try the lock nut if it doesn fit jst take the set back and tell them that they dont fit on the car

I tried that and then looked on the Internet and there is a stupid amount of different locking nut with just different profiles inside. Or it would defeat the object of the licking wheel nut if they could easily be got off.

I got the sockects from halfords, I think they are Laser.

I'd try the socket with a reverse thread on that, looks a lot of room around it.

i had this problem and the mechanic charged me 20, as he has to use a jack because the car was too low to get into the garage, never mind on the ramps.

walsh 91, that was mine on my old wheels
