"TEAM EFFORT" build thread... my new vtr!

  1. #1
Hey guys, im new here. selling my glanza in a part exchange for a 2002 saxo vtr plus cash to pay off some debts. to be honest im used to 200+ bhp cars so its a bit of a downgrade but im a student and it has to be done. so basically im getting this vtr this week, its silver and 100% standard. 43k miles. first thing im going to do is give it a good service.

after ive paid off the debts lets say ive got around £500-700 to spend on modifying the vtr. im after making it look good and maybe a little performance increase etc. i wont have it long, max 6 months or so im guessing. im looking for the cheapest of everything, just to make it look nice. eg v cheap lowering springs etc. any ideas for free/cheap modifying for example spraying the wheels etc would be great. im not a fan of body kits or that but im open to any suggestions.

lets make a "team effort" build thread lol and if anyone from scotland would like to lend their kind services in assisting fitting, modding the car etc id like to get to know some people in the scene so could be a good way. ill add pictures from start to finish, im not losing any money so wouldnt mind having a wee bit of fun doing the car up from standard.

    thanks in advance guys

If I had that car and was staying to a budget I would:

Lower it on 50mm Apex springs and back around 40mm
    Spray VTR wheels gloss black
    De-wiper the rear
    Smoke headlights and fogs too
    Shorter aerial
    Rear smoked jewel lights
3" tailpipe back box (I wouldn't bother with any other performance mods if they aint keeping the car for long)
    Dimma grille

Thats about it really. You will probably be called a sheep for doing most of these mods but who cares lol and always remember that less is more so you don't have to do too many modifications to a car to make it look reseanable.

Modifiying isnt really something to be done on the cheap i hate to tell ya, ya can if you want, but it wont be a very good car.
  4. #4
not that fussed really, its pretty much just going to be a run about for 6 months. doesnt need to take the twistys at 100mph, just needs to look good while im cruising round them lol. its not gona get ragged at all. want to get the lowest springs i can for the cheapest i can etc.
  5. #5
Lowest springs you can get for a Saxo is 60mm but I wouldn't get them cos' according to members on here they ruin the handling and damage other parts of the car in the process.

    Btw post #2 edited.

im pretty much just wanting to make the car look/sound good for a little money as possible. your opinions and advice, such as the 60mm ruing the handling and stuff is all useful stuff. you guys are the experts on saxos.

CAN A MOD PLEASE MOVE THIS TO A BETTER LOCATION? my bad for wrong section k

    aup mate, welcome

look for second hand parts on ebay/ for sale section (when you can get on it)

open cone air filter will make it sound nice, and you get them cheap
  8. #8
If you go lower than 40mm then it will cost more, as you will require the dampers aswell, which are pretty expensive, and the handling goes downhill after 40mm anyway.

And yeh, as said above, just things such as smoking the lights, meshing the grill, or dewipering the rear, and backboxes etc will look good.
Then for abit more performance, you could replace the standard air filter with a 'BMC' or a 'green' one etc. maybe strip out the rear seats, to save weight, then put them back in when you come to selling it.

Also just a simple service could help, and wouldnt be very expensive if you can do it yourself.

I am down 60 on the front 90 on the rear - with upgraded dampers all round. The handeling dont seam too bad to me, BUT it does seam to go through track rods and ball joints fast.

You cant say that. The list that has been put up is what pretty much what everyone does anyway, you dont need to spend alot of money to make a great car

You can make a car look decent with minimal money spent to be honest.
Its brand spanking new never been used as i got the green filter upgrade with the kit

Ill have a look and try and find it on google

Here you go its not the best in the world but will give you nice roar and its cheap

Basically im doing the same, because I recently lost my job or whatever...

    So far I have

De-wipered (best cheap mod imo) Completly free & you can sell the motor/wiper arm if you want. All you need is a grommet to fill the hole, Costs about 2 quid

Tinted front lights, fogs, indicators, rear lights (or whatever ones you want out of them) Costs the price of a can of laquer, black paint and primer.

Using the sprays you bought for above you can also do you're badges if you want... I did, so thats free.

The most expensive thing I did recently, is bought a magnex backbox for 60, makes the back end look alot nicer. not fitted yet.

I also have 60mm spax springs that I have had for ages but they havn't been fitted as doing the torsion bar will cost a bit more.

I also am on the lookout for some colour coded mirror caps.

And I am going to get a short aerial from poundland

So people spend thousands on expensive parts for no reason? when what your saying is budget parts are just as good. I dont really think so imo
  20. #20
I can see both sides of the argument, modding isnt cheap, but there are number of cheap/free mods which can be done to dramatically change the appearance of ones car to an extent (most of which have been listed above). Obviously you wont have an award winning fantastic euro beast on your hands, but as he says in the first post, he's only after some cheap mods to be done to make his car look nice for 6 months or so. It is possible.

So to make a good car you need to spend thousands of pounds on mods b*llshit, look at alot of cars on here they dont have the earth spent on them and they still handle well and perform well, for example i bought a set of bilstein group n dampers with 155lb faulkner springs, upper and lower omp strut braces all for £300 does this mean my car doesnt handle aswell as somone who has spent £500 just on the dampers?

So are you also saying that your car is no good then?

No, i am saying that my car isnt the best, and £300 on suspension, is a lot when this fella is saying he only wants to buy some springs. i cba arguing with you anymore over personal opinion.

    talk about cynical dude.
for £500 i know i can have the car looking pretty good. i can fit most of the parts myself, do spraying myself, servicing myself etc. if you can pick up cheap or used parts i could do a fair whack to it. its not a mag car im after just a nice looking run about. jeeso! thanks for the great advice some of ya!
  25. #25
to be honest i dont mind paying a little extra for suspension and as it does dramatically enhance the look. its the first thing id want to do apart from spray the wheels myself and service it. im guessing along the lines of

1.air filter £5 +p&p off the guy above
    2.spray alloys black £40
3.lowering springs poss with shocks upto £200ish
4.possibly spray bump strips body coloured £40? (anyone have pics of this)
5.maybe an in-dash dvd player depending on what the used parts sales has to offer, plus some good speakers upto £200
    6. de-wiper the rear £2
    7. backbox £50ish
    8. small ariel £5
    9. a good fecking clean - free i have the products

thats just over £500 and im hoping not to spend as much as that if i dont need to. the interior is mint so no need to touch that. and i do think this will make a hugeeeeeeeeeeeee difference to this wee thing. not looking at mag cover, just a fun little run about for 6 months.
  26. #26
Don't pay £5 for that air filter, they're 99p on kam racing lol
  27. #27
kyle mate if you want cheap bang for buck stuff got for manifold exhaust and enclosed induction. That way in 6 months time etc at least you can take those off put car back to standard get money for that and pretty much make most of your money back on above bits.

In regards to suspension just a basic kit mate springs only end of day your only keeping it for 6months brakes 266mm ones cheap and make half money back selling VTR ones off.

cheap cheerful and still have 100-200 left over and mkae most back when you sell tastier bits off after you finished with the car so keep all the standard bits you take off
  28. #28
40mm all round + full supersprint... oo + some angel eyes
  29. #29
    go the car now
put xenons on it, and just this minute finished spraying the alloys gloss black. thinking off wither spraying the bump strips gloss black or body coloured. undecided yet. also gave the exhaust a nice scrub its shown it really nice so think im gonna leave that standard.
  30. #30
just ordered 50mm lowering springs, im guessing these are just for the front yes? is it difficult to lower the rear/ does it cost anything?
  31. #31
Springs will be for the front only, and there is a few guides here on how to adjust your torsion bar. Should be easy to do if its not seized.
  32. #32
Spend your money on some decent shocks and springs,
    and uprate the brakes.

    Leave it that way.
  33. #33
    http://www.saxperience.com/forum/sho...hlight=torsion

wouldn'y recommend dropping it real low without uprated shocks etc but your choice mate
  34. #34
may aswell have a bash a doing the torsion bar myself maybe try to get someone to give me a hand.

id like to do the front suspension myself if possible too but do i need any specialist tools to compress the springs or anything?
  35. #35
lowring springs came through yesterday morning, was overnight post! thinking im going to try do the torsion bar, if i cant manage it ill take it down to the garage and get them to do it while they fit my springs. does anyone know the paint code for a 2002 vtr ( its the silvery blue colour)
