r888's....What's the deal?

  1. #1
Are they suitable road tyres or are they PURELY track orientated?

    Are they road legal?

Is there more tyre-roar with them?

Do they last as long on the road as say....T1R's?

    For a road/track car.....are they suitable?

    Thanks.

i think i saw a test done on these in a car mag a while back. ill tgry and find it for you

i know you get lots of spray in the wet
  3. #3
They are road legal but need to be a bit cautious if its very wet. But wouldnt last very long if doing trackdays aswel as daily driving best off getting 2 sets of wheels.
  4. #4
wont last anywhere near as long as proper road tyres imo.
and yes, they are road legal
  5. #5
road legal, would say they would last around 6k probably out live the parada spec 2's on i have now, if braying them around track normally get a good few track days out of them.

Go for the medium compound imo.

My t1-r's lasted 7kish and a track day.

I've got a set of Chronos with 888's on (part worn) that i'm selling

Oh and yeah road legal etc etc....

And very very good on track! Must be worth at least a few seconds a lap!
  7. #7
whilst they're road legal I wouldn't trust them entirely in the wet... great in the dry though. They are after all, track orientated and weren't designed for the road.

    T1-R's are your better bet.

    Confirmed my feelings.

    Cheers

r888s are used on a few sports cars as OE tyres (food for thought)

Good tyres, standing heavy water you can have some issues mind.

Not needed unless you plan to do track time though imo, more economical to use normal road tyres (some people on here may want them as grippy road tyres)
  10. #10
I'd go for them if you don't do alot of road miles (R888)...

Toyo T1-R's are a very good tyre but not great on track tbh ...

Mine have only covered a few thousand miles and 5/6 track sessions aren't looking too good. Looking properly scrubed down and warn. Although they are decent in the wet, compared to R888's which would be pap IMO.
  11. #11
I wouldnt recommend R888's for everyday use...
  12. #12
They are fine. Aquaplane like a coont in standing water though.

In damp conditions, if you drive steady and dont go helling into corners then they are fine.

You get alot of road noise through them though.

A spirited dry day blast makes it all worth while
  13. #13
totally pointless on a road car. Yes you will have fun on a few corners, but you can't push them to their limits safely. You will get more road noise and the wear rate is very high.
Jon has dunlop ones on his Lupo and I doubt the fronts have done 5k miles whereas my road tyres have done 20k

remember though steve, you taught the stig how to drive.

we fit them to our factory cars as standard in some models (westfields) and i really dont think they are as bad as people make them out to be.

if i were in a situation where i dont use the car much, have some extra cash and spice up the grip and fun of the car i would go for it...
  16. #16
Completly road legal but last 1/3 as long as normal tyres like the proxies for example.

In the dry there in another league to every tyre bar the yoko track day tyre (which i have heard good things about but have no personally experiance)

If you want to run them id have two sets of tyres, if your on your way to a track day running 888's and it starts to piss down you may as well turn around unless you have another set of wheels with wet/normal road tyres.

Not totally true tbh, It was absolutely pissing down at brands, inc some standing water and a few cars inc a R26R were not having issues on R888s in the slightest. I couldnt get heat into them so removed them before sayer posts

I was on combe not long ago dont know if youve been but its one of the worst in the country for standing water, so many caterhams running 888's me with my eagle f1's. easy lol

Some bloke turnt up in a lotus 2-11 which is like a single seater race car based on a elise i think. His third lap out he lost it on the pit straight thaught he couldnt counter and ripped both near side wheels off.

He was saying he has track insurance but his excess is 4k i was like His trailer alone cost more than my car

    Matt.

Caterhams full stop are lethal in the wet lol! We had lots of caterhams/rwd type Seven cars in the wall at brands when i was there.

    2elevens are cool .

Ive not done combe yet, where brands has issues is out of paddock mostly

coombe was ok in heavy rain in my old trackcar with Yoko ao48's. Never had an issue but the car was set up with a soft rear springrate so it didnt want to spin..
  21. #21
worth getting on a 2nd set of wheels imo.
not as a "full time tyre".
  22. #22
    F1's 4dawinwinwin
  23. #23
Another set of wheels with them on and your sorted

Even part worn R888's are better than most other tyres. The yoko track tyres are also ment to be good.
  24. #24
i got some newwwww tyres in work today to try......oh and yes, you should all be jelous.

this is an extremely rare tyre in this country and its designed to be a r888 that can be used every day and can outclass all tyres in the rain.....

    its called the TOYO R1R.
i very much doubt you can get hold of some though (although im trying)

  25. #25
i will say that if you use the 888s daily you will find they pick up cuts etc very easily!

i only fit mine on a spare set of rims for trackdays.
  26. #26
Someone's just put a thread about these up. MIght look into them. Danny if u can get hold of some fancy seeing if you can get a few sets cheaper maybe a little group buy of 5?

yep mate, ill be able to tell you exactly how good soon as ill be driving the chairmans car with them on.. he got them free off mr toyo the lucky bugger as he's a very "important" man.
  34. #34
    Hahaha let us all know...
  35. #35
i used r888's on my incarod (106) race car which i race at wheels/brafield and hednesford raceway....although we only do oval racing they stick to tarmac brilliant when there warm harder compound tyres would never handle like they do.
wear very quickly though and unless you live somewhere it doesnt rain i wouldnt bother tbh.
  36. #36
i use eagle f1's on my vts have done for a nearly 2 years now, however i am very tempted to change to r888's for my road tyres now.

A friend of mine swears by them, he uses them on the road on his 440bhp type r impreza and the grip is insane! i was out on wednesday night in his impreza and the conditions were patchy, we were on a country road came round several reasonably tight corners which were damp and it didn't twitch once.

He also used them on his previous track car that he frequently used on the road which was mk2 fiesta with a 186bhp rsturbo engine in it. He reckons they lasted about 6-7k on the front with combined track and 'enthusiastic' driving.

he has however said they can be unpredictable in heavy rain
